Verridon is Very Good

Lauriston bred Verridon won impressively at Toowoomba last night. The Eric Ropiha trained grey gelding box seated during the class 4 race over 1050 metres. Prior to the turn jockey Tatts Fujinuma pushed out to give the 4yo room. Verridon set chase after Ulmarra who had stolen a break on the rest of the field. Verridon won by 0.8 lengths.

Verridon is by Statue Of Liberty out of Black Zephyr mare, Sea Zephyr. It was his fourth win.

Other Lauriston bred runners this weekend, included 2yo Al Jandar, who

backed from his debut win by running a gallant second at Sandown yesterday and Complete Control whose late sectionals were impressive as she ran in to second place at Bendigo over 1000m today. Both runners were trained by Robbie Griffiths. Empowering was a placegetter at Port Augusta in her first start on the dirt.

Lauriston’s Thirtieth Bred Individual Winner

Tango Express flew from her wide alley at Kilmore yesterday in a 3YO fillies maiden over 1100 metres. Ridden by jockey Jade Darose she settled on the pace,  just outside the leader, Katiet. Katiet led to the turn before being challenged by Tango Express in the straight. The Ricky Maund prepared

3yo drew away in the final stages of the race to win by more than a length.

The win has pushed Tango Express’ career earnings to more than $26,000. She has been runner up on three other occasions from her eight starts.

Tango Express is the thirtieth individual winner bred at Lauriston and following Al Jandar’s win, the second in a week.  The Success Express filly is the oldest living foal from Lauriston mare Entango (by Entrepreneur). Entango has a 2yo filly by King Charlemagne, a yearling colt by Japanese stallion Jungle Pocket and is currently in foal to Lonhro.

Al Jandar Looks The Goods

Al Jandar had his first race start – A 1100 metre race for two year old maidens at Ararat on Monday 31st May. Ryan Maloney settled the gelding on the pace. Upon straightening Al Jandar

moved up a gear and quickly raced clear from the on pacers.  Ryan glanced over his shoulders 150 metres from home and saw that the backmarkers were not making ground either. Al Jandar won by more than four lengths.

After the race, Ryan indicated that the gelding should be able to get over further ground and may make city grade.

Al Jandar is by Al Samer out of Canny Lad mare Cica Cica Boom. The win makes him the twenty-ninth individual winner bred at Lauriston. He is also the third two year winner this season from Lauriston mares. General Truce won the Group 3 Marybyrnong Plate during Flemington’s spring carnival and Powerful Pegasus won the first two legs of Alice Spring’s two year old race series this Autumn by a combined margin of eleven lengths.

Al Jandar was purchased by trainer Robbie Griffiths for owner Rosemary Thomson from Lauriston at Inglis’ 2009 Premier sale in Melbourne.

Ronald’s Donald Double

Ronnie Bell recently relocated to Victoria and is apprenticed to Ricky Maund. His double at Donald today, came on the back of win at Sandown yesterday.

In the sixth at Donald – a 3yo maiden – Ronnie was aboard Gwenda Johnstone’s Bianconi gelding, Thebarwonprince. He took a sit just off the favourite before pouncing in the straight to win impressively.

Ronnie’s second win was in the last on Gold Energy for Ricky Maund. This time he sat wide, slightly worse than midfield. Gold Energy leapt out of the ground in the straight and was a convincing winner. Ronnie had won aboard Gold Energy previously.

Ronnie looks to have a promising future.

Ultra Consistent Show Stealer Does It Again

Show Stealer drew a wide gate in the last at Sandown today – a 1200 metre race for mares rated 0-78 (Captain Gerrard Series, Heat 1). Characteristically she jumped well to lead effortlessly. Well rated by Jockey Ronald Bell, she was never really challenged. She won the race by more than a length. The ultra consistent mare, trained by Ricky Maund, has captured three wins and five seconds (two at Moonee Valley) in eight of her last ten outings.

Pegasus Too Powerful

Lauriston bred two year old Powerful Pegasus made it two from two at Alice Springs yesterday. The Distant Music gelding was sent out at very short odds, and did not let his supporters down. Finding the lead comfortably, Powerful Pegasus dictated the 1100 metre race to the turn. And when Paul Denton pushed the go button, Powerful Pegasus drew further away to win by four lengths. It was an impressive back up from his debut three weeks ago, when he won at the same venue over 1000 metres – on that occasion by 7&½ lengths. The TROBIS qualified gelding, trained by Lisa Lefoe has now earned $24,000 from his two starts.

Powerful Pegasus, out of Lauriston’s Dehere mare, Here For Honour, was sold by Lauriston at Inglis’ 2009 Autumn yearling sale in Melbourne. Powerful Pegasus is a half brother to Agar.

Ricky Turns up the Energy

Ricky Maund sent Gold Energy in to the bull ring and over some jumps after his disappointing run at Moe. He also decided to take the blinkers off. “I think they stirred him up too much”. It did the trick. Yesterday, Gold Energy was a different horse.

Ronald Bell took the ride in the Cool Rooms Galore Rising Stars Handicap for apprentice jockeys over 1200 metres at Kilmore. Ronald settled the gelding on the fence, a little further back than mid field. Rounding the turn, Bell, found space and guided the gelding across and wide to the better part of the track. Gold Energy did not let him down. He accelerated to win by ¾ length, running away.

It was Gold Energy’s third win.

Happy Easter for Zofabird

Zofabird’s trainer and owner, Emma Hubbard, selected Justin Potter to ride the three year old filly in the 1100 metre Penola maiden. Settling back on the fence, Potter guided the filly along the inside. Zofabird gave Midnite Crusade a length start in the straight. Zofabird proved too strong and wore the favourite down to won in a photo.

Zofabird’s win on Sunday was well deserved. She had displayed form in her last three starts and in particular running second to Kate’s Dream in her previous run. Kate’s Dream won again last Wednesday.

Zofabird is by Danbird out of Lauriston’s mare Zofagal. She is the 27th individual winner bred at Lauriston.

Ricky Maund and the Orange and Green Land a Running Double at Ararat

Ricky Maund accepted with three horses at Ararat today. All performed admirably.

Gold Lining stepped out in the second over a mile. Jumping well, Jade Darose crossed and slowed the gelding in to the box seat. Mid race Gold Lining appeared to be losing ground, however Jade pushed the gelding out and commenced his run at the turn. Rounding the bend, he quickly put paid to the front runners, but it was the back markers, Sir Cohen and Keypoints who claimed him on the line. Gold Lining finished third by just over half a length and nearly three lengths in front of the fourth horse. “He’s earned a reprieve,” said Ricky after the run. “He’s starting to understand what is required. It’s the first time he has really tried – He had a good blow after the race.”

Teen Spirit was in the next race, over 1200 maiden for fillies and mares. The 4yo Jeune mare jumped well. Linda Meech, rated the pace superbly. Although tiring on the line, Teen Spirit hung on to win by just under half a length. “She jumps well, and she is fast. She would probably be suited to 1000 metre race as well”, Linda reported in the post race interview.

Lauriston bred gelding, Agar was in the very next race over 1350 metres for three year olds. With Andrew Mallyon on board, the gelding settled toward the rear of the small field. Andrew peeled out at the turn and from then on always looked the likely winner. He won by a length. “I had to keep his mind on the job, he tends to star gaze when he gets to the front, but he won with something in store,” said Andrew after the race. It was Agar’s third win and lifted his career prizemoney to more than $40,000. Agar is by Commands out of Lauriston mare Here for Honour (by Dehere).
