Fastnet Rock Colt out of Express Fair

The first three foals for the season were colts, and sure enough, as predicted, the next three were fillies.

Skidoodle, a half sister to stakes performer Aboutski produced an impressive chestnut filly by Hold That Tiger. Inprivato followed with another chestnut filly. This one by Sequalo. And Let It Ring produced a lovely Elvstroem filly. This foal is a half to stakes placed Port Call, Lord Of Lauriston and multiple Singapore winner Bel’s Ringer.

The scales have tilted slightly back toward the colts after Success Express mare, Express Fair, a full sister to consistent city winner Speaker produced an attractive colt by Fastnet Rock. This colt is closely related to stakes placed mare Lagerphone (Fastnet Rock x Speaker).

Too Deadly debuted in July in the $100,000 Inglis bonus race at Caulfield. Ridden by Damien Oliver he began slowly before making up late ground quickly to finish an impressive 5^th behind  Breitling.

Punters did not miss the promising debut and Too Deadly was sent out a short odds on favourite in the first today at Geelong – a 1100 metre maiden. This time he was slowly away again but steered to the outside by Michael Rodd. Although facing the breeze he let down nicely and won by a length and a quarter.

“He is still very green” explained jockey Micahel Rodd “he will be improved by the run.” Merv Harvey from Mark Kavanagh’s stable advised “He is still a bit of a baby. He will be an Autumn horse.”

Like Shocking and Whobegotyou, Too Deadly is by Street Cry.  He is the first foal from Success Express mare, Roxy Express.

Too Deadly foaled at Lauriston in 2007. “ He has a cracking yearling half-sister by Good Journey,” explains Lauriston’s farm manager Paul Eden.

Tale Of The Cat ex Mighty Atalanta colt 2010

The first three Lauriston foals this season are colts.

Flower Power produced a strong bay Shamardal colt on the fourth of August. Little more than a week later Cica Cica produced a strapping brown Bel Esprit colt and last night Mighty Atalanta foaled a 63kg bay colt by Tale Of The Cat.

“This season we had 28 mares in foal – and the first three born have all been colts” exclaimed Lauriston’s stud manager Paul Eden. “All of them have size about them, so it’s a terrific start to the season. Mother nature always has an amazing knack of balancing everything up, so now I am expecting a few fillies”.

Both Flower Power and Cica Cica are by Success Express. Cica Cica won five races and is a half-sister to the impressive Robbie Griffiths trained 3 year old gelding Al Jandar. Her first colt (pictured) has just turned two. He is an imposing ‘look at me’ black colt by Bianconi who commanded a lot of attention at the Adelaide Magic Millions sale earlier this year. He was purchased by Byron Cozamanis for $60,000, and has been named Cavallo Nero.

Mighty Atalanta is also a winner of five races and a half-sister to the stakes placed Port Call and Lord Of Lauriston, who has won more than $250,000 on the race track. Mighty Atalanta is the dam of Elimination who has won three times.

As a racehorse Shamardal won four Group Ones and in his short career at stud, has already sired eight stakes winners, including multiple group 1 winners, Faint Perfume and Lope De Viga. Lauriston was fortunate that Flower Power was covered by Shamardal on the second day of the 2009 breeding season. Despite a strong book of mares, Shamardal only covered 34 mares last spring in Australia  before injuring himself while performing stud duties.

Flower Power is a daughter of popular brood mare sire, Success Express. During her racing career she displayed a great motor and a strong heart. She won races at Geelong and Ballarat from 1200 to 1300 metres.

It was the third career win for the Jason Clisby trained Perugino filly. She’ll Avago, a daughter of General Nediym mare Novagen was bred at Lauriston.

Levant, bred at Lauriston, is by Rubiton out of Sea Zephyr. He is a half brother to the consistent Verridon who has won his last two starts.

Confidently ridden by Tats Fujinuma, Verridon looked the likely winner for the duration of the straight, pouncing on the leaders and running away to win by nearly 2 lengths.

The grey gelding prepared by trainer Eric Ropiha has now won five races with a winning range from 1000 to 1200 metres.

Verridon was bred at Lauriston. He is by Statue Of Liberty out of Black Zephyr mare, Sea Zephyr.

Lauriston Bred Winners

“He is a different horse since we took him to the bull ring”, explains Gold Energy’s trainer Ricky Maund. “He had another work out before this run”.  

Gold Energy has won three races and has been placed twice in five of his last six starts since becoming aquainted with the bull ring. One of the placings included an unlucky second, after weaving through the field to be beaten in a photo by Reconcentrate at Morphettville over 1200 metres last weekend.

Yesterday’s win takes Gold Energy’s tally to five.

Verridon is by Statue Of Liberty out of Black Zephyr mare, Sea Zephyr. It was his fourth win.

Other Lauriston bred runners this weekend, included 2yo Al Jandar, who backed from his debut win by running a gallant second at Sandown yesterday and Complete Control whose late sectionals were impressive as she ran in to second place at Bendigo over 1000m today. Both runners were trained by Robbie Griffiths. Empowering was a placegetter at Port Augusta in her first start on the dirt.
