Crabbing Pinches Morphettville Win

Crabbing at Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm's Yearling Parade 2012

Crabbing at Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm’s Yearling Parade, 2012

Lot 28 – a bay colt by Holy Roman Emperor from Orpenella was among Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm’s  yearling draft at Adelaide’s 2012 Magic Millions Sale. The colt attracted plenty of  attention but none more than from local trainer Jon O’Connor. Jon bought the colt for $26,000.

Previously known as Bolt the yearling stepped out just eight months later in an official trial at Morphettville. By then he had turned two, he had been gelded and he had been officially named Crabbing. He won the trial and Jon elected to spell the 2yo.

It is noteworthy that the runner up in the trial, Iconic, went on to win the inaugural VOBIS Gold Rush and finished runner up at Group 3 level in Sydney with earnings of $239,000. The third horse in the trial, Bring A Ring, won her very first race and her next – a listed race by more than 2 lengths. From only five career starts Bring A Ring has also finished third at Group 3 and listed level.

Crabbing

Today, at Morphettville over 1,000 metres in a race for 2yos was Crabbing’s third career start. Crabbing exploded from the gates but Red Magnet pushed up underneath to the front. Jockey Tod Pannell allowed Crabbing to settle outside the race leader. The pair eyeballed each other throughout the event. After straightening it appeared that Crabbing, with the drop, would run away with the race, but Red Magnet was tough and dug deep. Crabbing won by 0.2 lengths while from the back Our Miss Bossy flashed home for third.

Crabbing became the sixty fourth individual winner bred by Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm and alongside Zellindi, Apollo’s Choice and Stimulatte, the fourth 2yo winner for the season.

Super Sorisam

Yesterday at Geelong Sorisam, in the orange and green saluted for trainer Ricky Maund. Sorisam was slow from the gates, but he had Nick Hall on and there are few better backmarkers than Nick. The race was run at a strong tempo. Nick allowed the gelding to work into the race. Sorisam was impressive flashing home to win the 1,100 metre event by more than a length. It was Sorisam’s second win from three starts and the sixth in his career.

Couperin Digs Deep

Couperin in October 2009 – just a week old with his dam Tendue

Couperin has given trainer Doug Harrison every indication that he could get over ground and so Doug entered him into a 2,100 metre race at Echuca today – the Betfair Murray Mallee Stayers Heat 2.

Chris Symons who had won on Kings Palace earlier was on board. Couperin was away cleanly from gate 2 and after Chris allowed Carmen Over Baby to cross was perfectly poised in the box seat. The race was run at a slow tempo. At the turn Carmen Over Baby began to lose ground and so Chris steered Couperin around the two leaders. With the winning post in sight Couperin was the race leader – but that also made him a sitting duck. From the outside Stable Star gave chase while Well Primed pushed up inside and Marvelite joined in the fray. But Couperin displayed a will to win. He stuck his neck out, found and was strongest on the line. The 3yo won by more than a length. Doug was right – The horse could stay.

Couperin is by Ne Coupez Pas from General Nediym mare Tendue. Tendue has produced two older foals. Both are winners including Alcohol who has won more than $200,000, four city races to 2,000 metres and was runner up at Group 3 level. Tendue is a half-sister to city winning stayer Rambert.

Couperin, Alcohol and Rambert were all bred at Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm.

Stimulatte Wins on Debut

Stimulatte – LTF Yearling Parade 2012

Lot 138 in Adelaide’s 2012 Magic Millions was a bay colt by Excites from Caffe Francais. The colt was one of seven yearlings presented among Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm’s draft for that sale.  The colt was purchased by trainer Gordon Richards for $7,000.

Stimulatte

Stimulatte

The yearling previously known as X-Man is now a gelding and has been named Stimulatte. He had his first race start today at Gawler. Unloved by punters in the 2yo maiden over 1,111 metres Stimulatte was sent out at a price of more than 20-1. On top Amy Herrmann rode him beautifully. Ridden along the rails Stimulatte had cover throughout and when Amy found room in the straight punters must have known they had the market wrong. Stimulatte won by nearly four lengths.

Stimulatte became the 63rd individual winner bred at Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm. The win came just five days after another Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm winner broke her maiden status. Rapid Link (pictured below) is by Charge Forward from Inthemix. She had been knocking on the door before saluting at Geelong over 1,100 metres on Friday 10th May. Working  to the line Rapid Link with Patrick Moloney up prevailed by a narrow margin from the courageous runner up – Nicked It. Rapid Link was purchased and is trained by John Moloney.

Bedouin Express Wins at Bairnsdale

Shea Eden placed Bedouin Express in the seventh race at Bairnsdale over 2000m today. He also made a couple of gear adjustments – Blinkers off and pacifiers on, the nose roll stayed on. Just half the size of Bedouin Express was Red Sole who worked hard and wide to lead during the early stages of the race. Drawn the inside Bedouin Express box seated but took  time to settle for Adam McCabe.  Adam maintained a trail ride along the inside giving the gelding every chance. Bedouin Express and the gallant Red Sole fought neck and neck down the straight but on the line it was Bedouin Express by a small margin with Carmen Over Baby a further three lengths away third.

It was Bedouin Express’ seventh career win – his second win for his new owners and stable and took his earnings to more than $110,000. Bedouin Express was bred at Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm and is from Gal Express.

Apollo’s Choice Wins on Debut

Apollo's Choice as a yearling

Apollo’s Choice as a yearling

Shea Eden programmed Apollo’s Choice’s debut run in the first at Benalla today over 1215 metres. Luke Currie settled the 2yo midfield. When the pace slowed Luke moved the horse into the race. Apollo’s Choice loomed outside the leaders but took some time to find his feet after straightening before letting down. He won by a narrow margin just edging out Our Casanova.

“That was a good win” said Shea Eden after the race. “What he did today was on raw ability alone – he is still very green. It’s great to get a win under his belt at this stage but I’ll probably tip him out now. He’ll be better at three and he  looks like he will get 1400 or a mile.”

Attached to the race was a Super VOBIS and VOBIS Gold bonuses that boosted the Benalla maiden prizemoney for first from $9,000 to $27,410. Apollo’s Choice became the 61st individual winner bred at Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm. He is by Choisir and the first live foal from Apolina, a full sister to Prince Rubiton.

And The General Salutes Again

Nick Hall Lands a Double

Nick Hall Lands a Double

Nick Hall witnessed General Truce’s turn of foot first hand aboard That’s The One at Flemington a fortnight ago. Likely winner That’s The One had to settle for second place when General Truce flashed home in the closing stages to win.

Last Saturday Nick Hall was booked to ride General Truce in the Group 3 D C McKay Stakes over 1,100 metres at Morphettville. Nick’s greatest concern was the 58.5kg impost for the small gelding. After listening to instructions from Ricky Maund, Nick announced his intentions to win in the last stride. The statement had a double reference. It related to General Truce’s recent racing pattern and his last start win, but also to Nick Hall’s ride earlier in the day aboard Calcatta where he won in the last stride and by the barest of margins over Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm bred Zellindi in the Listed Dequetteville Stakes for 2yos.

Wide and next to last at the turn it was apparent that General Truce was going to need every bit of his turn of foot to be any chance. The General delivered. Swamping the thirteen horse field General Truce flashed home to win the race 0.3 lengths clear of Karacatis – just as Nick Hall had predicted.

The win took the Brief Truce gelding’s prize money earnings beyond $700,000. It was his eighth win and second at Group 3 level – his first beyond 1,000m. “General Truce has really come on since his Flemington win. His trackwork last Tuesday was perhaps his best ever,” said trainer Ricky Maund after the race. “Many have said he won’t get 1,200, but he is more mature now and settles in running. On his current form he deserves a crack at The Goodwood”.

General Truce, from General Nediym mare General Resolve was bred by Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm.

Sorisam Jumps Back to the Winner’s Circle

Prior to Sorisam’s back up run at Yarra Valley yesterday Ricky Maund decided to alter his training regime. Ricky sent the gelding out over a few jumps. Ricky knew the gelding was well and felt the change may sharpen him up. He was right.

Yesterday the majority of races at Yarra Valley were won by the front runners. Sorisam did himself no favours when he dwelled at the start of the 1,000 metre journey. Sorisam was last at the turn and it appeared that front runner Pink Zink had the race to herself. But the race was not over. Dean Holland spotted half a gap between two horses and urged Sorisam through. The gap widened and Sorisam clicked up a gear. Sorisam found the line just 0.2 lengths ahead of Pink Zink with Terms Of Trade a further 2 lengths in arrears.

It was the Sequalo gelding’s fifth win.

The Little General Salutes at Flemington

Genearl Truce returning to scale Pic by Su-Ann Khaw

General Truce returning to scale Pic by Su-Ann Khaw

Most often personnel in the armed forces would be obliged to salute a General. But when our little general, General Truce saluted at Flemington last Saturday the owners and his breeder, Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm felt obliged to salute him.

One of the very memorable occasions an owner experiences is to see his horse return to the mounting yard as a winner coming under the arch at Flemington as proud of his achievement as any great fighter. And what a fighter he is! Small in stature maybe, but with a huge heart and a desire to win at all costs, he showed last Saturday the fighting spirit of all great Generals.

The fact that he has done this on three occasions, once at group 3 level, just highlights how gutsy this little horse with the big heart is!

And when you analyse that General Truce was a product of a $6,000 service fee to his sire Brief Truce from an under-rated General Nediym mare, General Resolve you quickly understand just what a great investment he has been for his owners and breeders having recouped in excess of $670,000 in prize money not counting the $54,000 car he

won for his loyal trainer, Ricky Maund, by winning the 2012 series of the 955 metre races at Moonee Valley in the fastest time of the series.

And make no mistake, this little general is nowhere near retirement, so let’s all keep saluting!

As a wise man once said “ The judge doesn’t ask who your mummy and daddy are, nor how much you cost”.
