Glenariff Wins at Balaklava

Although  concerned with her wide gateTrainer Darren Egan reported that he was pleased with Glenariff prior to yesterday’s 1,050 metre race at Balaklava. After jumping Shayne Cahill brought Glenariff back to allow the early speed to move up beneath her and shape the field. Understandably Glenariff was wide but Shayne found a trail behind Kissed Again. The Balaklava track has a long straight and Shayne ensured Glenariff had clear running before making his move. They found the lead a furlong from the post but it wasn’t until the final stages that Glenariff was most dominant. She pulled away to win by a length.

It was Glenariff’s six career win.

Glenariff was bred by Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm. She is by Jeune from Carnlough and a half sister to Golden Rose winner Doonan.

The Shea Eden stable was represented by two horses at Cranbourne’s meeting last Friday night.  Trinity House sat on the pace and was strong on the line to win the second by two lengths with Vlad Duric on board. Conversely To Infinity was ridden at the back of the field in the last. At the turn It appeared that the cause was lost but Adam McCabe had other ideas. Rounding the field To Infinity found all the necessary gears to just edge out race leader Lucy Lil at the post.

Yesterday following the Cranbourne double Shea took Zellindi to Moonee Valley to contest the first – a 2yo race for fillies that carried Super VOBIS and VOBIS Gold bonuses for eligible horses. Zellindi was eligible.

Zellindi showed promise in her first start in the VOBIS Gold Rush at Bendigo where she struck interference at the start of the race. At the Valley she was quickly away. Nathan Rose positioned the filly just outside the race leader and favourite Calcatta. The pair made it a race of their own with Zellindi claiming the upper hand after straightening.  Zellindi held out Calcatta to win by half a length. Five lengths away was Laguana Star who finished third.

The win made it three from three for Shea Eden.

Zellindi was bred by Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm. She is by Bel Esprit from Emilydelago – a half sister to Group 2 winner Shanghai Warrior. According to veterinary reports of Zellindi’s xrays she was deemed as a ‘high risk’.  These reports prevented Zellindi from being a saleable proposition at yearling sales. The reports were disclosed to racing media guru Mick Sharkie who had taken a shine to the horse after seeing her in the paddock. Aware of the risks he and some of his associates decided to purchase 50% of the horse. The group of owners seem to be a great bunch of people and were certainly delighted with the win.

Zellinidis’ name derives from the amalgamation of the names of Mick’s daughter and Shea’s daughter.

Zellindi became the 60th individual winner bred by Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm.

The Yearlings, (and staff), from Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm Perform Well at the 2013 Melbourne Premier Sales.

Now that the 2013 Inglis Premier Sales have concluded Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm is proud to announce that its draft of 8 yearlings, (7 sold), in the Premier 1 section of the sale topped the overall averages.

This is a great achievement for such a young broodmare farm not only for the quality of the young horses but also for the staff, a fact that was recognised by the Inglis Sales Company when principal, Peter Heagney, announced at the conclusion of sales that Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm had won the Luxbet award for the best presented draft at the sales.

Congratulations to farm managers Paul & Kathy Eden for their dedication and enthusiasm to achieve this wonderful result, but as Kathy pointed out it was a team effort that culminated in the final success. Well done to all!

The outstanding yearlings were the colt from Glimmers by Redoute’s Choice and the filly from Acceleration by Snitzel, both selling for $300K. The filly from Cica Cica by Choisir was also a highlight selling for $180K.  Congratulations to all purchasers and may they have much success on the race track.

Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm Tops the Adelaide Magic Millions Sale 2nd. Session.

Having the disappointment of losing two of their draft from the 1st. session at Adelaide, Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm was ecstatic that their colt from Cosmic Express by Domesday topped the sales during the 2nd. session at $51K. Congratulations to Blue Moon Syndicate, (including Dane Swan and Dale “Daisy” Thomas), for selecting this colt and perhaps he is destined for as much fame as the “Magpies” in the months ahead.

The purchase in the 2nd. session by Nick Harnett of the filly from Nova Gen by Teofilo for $44K established Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm as the vendor with the best average for that session providing not only the top colt but also the top priced filly.

Once again, the team at Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm is congratulated on this outstanding result.

2014 Overview

With the 2013 sales season behind us, (we chose not to present at the Sydney Easter Sales this year), Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm will be concentrating its efforts on the current weanling stock to hopefully emulate the 2013 outcomes in 2014.

And already the process is underway with young horses adjusting to life without their mums and being taken for daily exercise by humans no less.

This is always an interesting progression in the development t of the young horse and with astute handlers, Paul & Kathy Eden, Warren Diggles and the whole team it can be a most rewarding time and a little frustrating as well.

Ricky’s Timely Return

Timely Truce

Timely Truce – Race 7 Kilmore 07 01 13

Timely Truce was given a freshen by trainer Ricky Maund after competing at Group 2 level at the close of the 2012 Spring carnival.

His first up run was at 1,100 metres at Kilmore yesterday with the added incentive of Super VOBIS prizemoney for the qualified gelding. Ricky Maund booked in form Adam McCabe to ride. Adam had won the previous race in a masterly ride aboard First Course for Ken Keys. Leading he had slowed and dictated the pace to narrowly hold out the late closers.

Adam McCabe

Adam McCabe after riding a running double

It was a different plan aboard Timely Truce. There was a good mixture of on pacers and back markers in the field and so Adam after being positive at the outset ensured that the gelding settled in a mid field position. Adam urged the gelding to challenge at the turn. The Kilmore straight is uphill and there was a strong head wind. Timely Truce had just come off a break and was not rock hard fit. Ricky had indicated that perhaps a 1,000 metre kick off may have been more preferable. The tough work was ahead. But Timely Truce is tough. He held out a late closing Tycoon Express to win by 0.3 length.

Timely Truce & Brooke

Timely Truce & Brooke

The win took Timely Truce’s earnings beyond $100,000. He has placed at listed level on three occasions including a third in the Talindert behind Caulfield Guineas winner All Too Hard.

Timely Truce was bred by Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm. His dam Gal Express has produced three foals to race – all are winners. Her fourth is an impressive Reset colt purchased by Doug Harrison at Melbourne’s 2012 yearling sales for $95,000. Her fifth is a Turffontein filly and will be among Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm’s draft at the Inglis 2013 Melbourne Yearling Sale. Lot 698.

Equissential on the Double Up – Could it be three on end?

EquissentialWhen trainer, Neville Saunders recommended to the owners that Equissential should butter up again after the strong win at Doomben 7 days ago, they were

a bit apprehensive.  The fact that the gelding would be coming back from 1600 metres to a 1400 metre race might make the task going forward to the Magic Millions Stayers Cup over 1800 metres next week a little daunting.

But Neville was adamant that this was a necessary “clean out” before taking on the big guns.

Today at Eagle Farm Equissential was ridden by Geoffrey Goold and under instructions was aggressive out of the gates.  He took up a forward position to be handy at the turn where he angled out for a clear run.  The horse responded and was very determined overtaking the three leaders in the run home. Geoffrey’s timing to get the gelding to the line ahead of the fast finishing Longshoreman was excellent.  It was a great ride and a magnificent training achievement.

Bring on next week at the Gold Coast forthe Magic Millions Stayers Cup.

Good luck Nev! and Equissential!

Why Lake Mountain? – Why Warwick?

Well may you ask these questions.

Quite simply the name of the 3y.o. filly that won convincingly at Warwick earlier today was an amalgamation of the names of her dam and sire with a little poetic licence – Emilydelago and Monashee Mountain – and the fact that the elder statesman of the O’Brien family who bred and now races the filly lived his early days not far from the winter holiday resort, Lake Mountain near Marysville, Victoria.

Why Warwick?   As the filly was  by a Queensland based stallion she was nominated for the QTIS and QTIS 6OO bonus schemes and when she was not selected for any of the major sales venues as a yearling the O’Briens through their Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm  sent her to Queensland based trainer, Neville Saunders to

compete in QTIS races.  Being a 3y.o. and QTIS qualified it was a foregone conclusion that Lake Mountain should do her early racing in Queensland.  And today she and trainer, Neville Saunders justified that decision when she went to Warwick to compete in a 3y.o maiden worth in excess of $10K to the winner if QTIS 6oo qualified.

Warwick is a long way from Corinella and without the aid of TV coverage we can only report that she won by 2 lengths paying $11.00 for the win, (no TAB).  But Lake Mountain became the 58th individual home-bred winner produced by Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm who will be presenting an outstanding draft at the 2013 Melbourne Premier Sales and Adelaide Magic Millions Sales.
