Couperin Digs Deep

Couperin in October 2009 – just a week old with his dam Tendue

Couperin has given trainer Doug Harrison every indication that he could get over ground and so Doug entered him into a 2,100 metre race at Echuca today – the Betfair Murray Mallee Stayers Heat 2.

Chris Symons who had won on Kings Palace earlier was on board. Couperin was away cleanly from gate 2 and after Chris allowed Carmen Over Baby to cross was perfectly poised in the box seat. The race was run at a slow tempo. At the turn Carmen Over Baby began to lose ground and so Chris steered Couperin around the two leaders. With the winning post in sight Couperin was the race leader – but that also made him a sitting duck. From the outside Stable Star gave chase while Well Primed pushed up inside and Marvelite joined in the fray. But Couperin displayed a will to win. He stuck his neck out, found and was strongest on the line. The 3yo won by more than a length. Doug was right – The horse could stay.

Couperin and Tendue (Dec 2009)

Couperin and Tendue in Dec 2009

Couperin is by Ne Coupez Pas from General Nediym mare Tendue. Tendue has produced two older foals. Both are winners including Alcohol who has won more than $200,000, four city races to 2,000 metres and was runner up at Group 3 level. Tendue is a half-sister to city winning stayer Rambert.

Couperin, Alcohol and Rambert were all bred at Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm.
