Rambert in a Cakewalk

Lauriston bred Rambert (by King Charlemagne out of Marie Rambert) was a dominant winner in the second heat of the stayer’s series at Echuca today. After being posted outside the leader in the earlier stages Jack Hill guided Rambert to

the front to set the pace for the remainder of the 2,100 metre course. At the turn he stole a break and the twelve horses following were very quickly off the bit. Jack glanced over his shoulders on a couple of occasions to ensure that he was clear, but the race was won a long way from home. Jack eased his mount down in the final stages. The margin to the second horse was 3.5 lengths with the same margin again to third.

It was the third win for the Shea Eden trained six year old from just fourteen career starts. Rambert is owned by Paul, Kathy and Colin Eden.

Rapid’s Flemington Fling

Rapidement and Tilly after the race

Rapidement’s first look at the Flemington straight was from the inside gate at the 1,000 metre mark at 12:35pm today.  After jumping positively jockey Dean Yendall took a hold to find a spot behind the leaders. The mare travelled comfortably to the 300 metre mark where she was momentarily held up for room. Dean knew the mare’s mettle and pushed her forward. Rapidement responded, punching through to find space. She was strong to the line.

Rapidement won by ¾ of a length from Legion’s Belle with Flourishing a further two lengths behind.

“It was a great ride and a gutsy win” commented trainer Ricky Maund after the race.

It was Dean’s second win aboard the mare at city grade.

Krypton from the get go – Rhodehaven from last

Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm bred Krypton won in a dominant display at his first outing earlier today. More than 1,000 kilometres away, but just fifteen minutes later Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm bred Rhodehaven was equally as emphatic in his win. But both did it in their own way.

3yo Krypton is by Hussonet and the first foal from Encosta De Lago mare Encapsulate. Trainer Paul Messara had been patient with the gelding’s preparation and felt that today’s maiden over 1400 metres at Gunnedah would be ideal for his first start.

The plan was to have the gelding ridden forward and jockey Leanne Henry obliged crossing to lead shortly after the start. Rating the gelding well Leanne had Krypton a length clear at the turn. The challengers loomed under vigorous riding, but then Leanne urged Krypton to step up. He responded impressively. Krypton found the line 3.5 lengths ahead of his closest rival.

Krypton became the 48th individual winner bred at Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm.

Meanwhile, prior to the next race at Donald, Rhodehaven already appeared out of luck. He had drawn barrier 13 in the 14 horse field and Michelle Payne who was booked to ride, had been injured in a fall in the first. Damian Lane was the pick up rider.

From the wide gate the 4yo gelding was always at the rear of the field. It was a great ride by Damian. Rhodehaven was the widest and out of the picture after straightening. Impressively, he rounded up the field to win by more than a length.

It was Rhodehaven’s third career win and first with his new trainer Darren Weir. Rhodehaven is by Statue Of Liberty from Lauriston mare Orpenella. He was purchased at Melbourne’s 2009 Premier Yearling Sale in 2009 for $52,500 by owner T. Jacklin.

Nero Sets Cranbourne Alight

Cavallo Nero at Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm's yearling parade

Last Friday night  Cavallo Nero was last of the ten horses in the third at Cranbourne. Peter Mertens clicked him into

gear. Magic of Emma looked home, but in the closing stages Cavallo Nero passed her to win the 0-62 rating 1,200 metre event by nearly half a length.

Cavallo Nero out of Success Express mare Cica Cica was bred by Lauriston together with Barbara and John Oates of the Corinella general store. “He was very impressive,” reported Barbara after the race. “He slipped at the start and out of barrier 13 found himself last. Although they wanted him to settle early and run home it didn’t go to plan during the race. Taking off at around the 600 metre mark, he still was able to round them up and win. Great effort.”

It was the second Cranbourne win for the Nick Harnett trained three year old from just six career starts. He has finished runner up in two of his other starts.

Cavallo Nero was one of the stand outs in Lauriston’s yearling draft at Adelaide in 2010. He was purchased for $60,000 by Byron Cozamanis.

Lauriston’s 2012 Yearling Sales Conclude

Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm’s yearling sales for 2012 concluded on a successful note at Inglis Easter sale in Sydney last Thursday.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club had not purchased a yearling at the Easter Sales since 2008 after Racing NSW allowed jockey Chris Munce to ride in Australia. This year the ban was lifted. The HKJC purchased eight yearlings for a total of $2.1 Million. Among them, purchased for $420,000 was Lauriston’s Lot 411 by Street Cry out of Street Smart.

The HKJC place strict criteria on any yearling they purchase. It is a credit to the Lauriston team that they picked up Street Smart’s colt.

Lot 186 (pictured) was Gold Edition’s first filly – by Encosta De Lago. Greg Eurell’s bid of $520,000 secured the filly for David and Carol Kirby. Just  a week earlier the industry had been saddened by the passing of the Kirby’s Cox Plate winning mare Pinker Pinker. Greg Eurell reported to TVN “Gold Edition was the iron horse. She competed at the highest level and was unbelievably tough so if this filly has a little bit of mum in her, I’m sure we’ll have some happy times ahead.”

It would be tremendous if this filly could provide the Kirbys with some of the enjoyment that Pinker Pinker gave them and some of the thrills that Gold Edition provided to Lauriston.

Amarazetti’s filly by Red Ransom (lot 37) did not reach the desired reserve. She has arrived home safely and appears destined to race in the orange and green.

Earlier this year Lauriston had sold all eight yearlings presented at Melbourne’s Inglis sale and all seven yearlings at Magic Millions Adelaide sale. The success at all three sales can be attributed to the dedication and hard work of Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm’s managers Paul and Kathy Eden and their team.

Velonski has a Big Heart

Last Saturday Velonski jumped well, and Jamie Mott positioned the gelding into the box seat. After straightening Jamie peeled Velonski out behind race leader Chosen Moment, before accelerating to the line. Velonski won the 2yo Moonee Valley 1200 metre race by 0.8 length and picked up $63,700.

It was Velonski’s second win from four starts. He had finished third in his two other starts. Cox Plate winning trainer Greg Eurell explained that the 2yo may have been four from four if he had been clean away in his other two starts.

Velonski was purchased by Shelly Hancox in session two of Melbourne’s Premier yearling sale just over a year ago for $30,000. He has now earned more than $83,000 and is one of six horses that make up Hancox Racing Syndicate Number 5.

Velonski, who was bred at Lauriston is by Falvelon and the first foal out of Encosta De Lago mare Skidoodle.

Ricky Gets the Keys

The trainer of the horse who won in the fastest of the eighteen race series over 955 metres at Moonee Valley would win a Mazda BT50 ute supplied by Essendon Mazda. Ricky Maund’s General Truce was setting the pace when he won heat nine in 55.28 seconds on New Year’s Eve.

Last night was the last race of the series for the season and General Truce started favourite. From the inside gate General Truce jumped well. Jockey Ben Knobel box seated the 4yo behind speedsters Fab Favola, Waltzes and Queen Delight. In the straight Queen Delight and Fab Fevol tired. Ben had the opportunity to take an inside run. But he had been instructed not to, and so he took the Brief Truce gelding around horses and set out after Waltzes who had kicked clear. It was a tough run and an excellent ride. It was only in the very last stride that General Truce got to the lead. Waltzes was game in defeat. Tramuntana, carrying weight took the inside run to flash home for third.

Rapidement had won earlier in the season, so the win was Ricky Maund’s third in the series. It also meant that he had won the BT50 ute.

General Truce has now won on five occasions with earnings of more than $480,000. General Truce was bred at Lauriston and is from General Nediym mare, General Resolve.

Consistent Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm bred Al Jandar was a deserved winner in the Benjeroop Gold Cup over 1200 metres at Cranbourne today. Settling a touch better than midfield, Al Jandar edged up to the two leaders at the turn, and then quickened after straightening. He held off the late finishing pair Mikey’s Magic and Terpsichore to win by half a length.

Al Jandar has been racing in tremendous form during this preparation. In his last six starts he has won twice, and placed on three occasions. The win is his career fourth, taking his total earnings to just under $125,000.

Al Jandar was bred at Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm and was purchased by Robbie Griffiths for owner Rosemary Thomson at Inglis’ Premier yearling sale in 2009 for $27,000.
