Nero Sets Cranbourne Alight

Cavallo Nero at Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm's yearling parade

Last Friday night  Cavallo Nero was last of the ten horses in the third at Cranbourne. Peter Mertens clicked him into

gear. Magic of Emma looked home, but in the closing stages Cavallo Nero passed her to win the 0-62 rating 1,200 metre event by nearly half a length.

Cavallo Nero out of Success Express mare Cica Cica was bred by Lauriston together with Barbara and John Oates of the Corinella general store. “He was very impressive,” reported Barbara after the race. “He slipped at the start and out of barrier 13 found himself last. Although they wanted him to settle early and run home it didn’t go to plan during the race. Taking off at around the 600 metre mark, he still was able to round them up and win. Great effort.”

It was the second Cranbourne win for the Nick Harnett trained three year old from just six career starts. He has finished runner up in two of his other starts.

Cavallo Nero was one of the stand outs in Lauriston’s yearling draft at Adelaide in 2010. He was purchased for $60,000 by Byron Cozamanis.
