Rapidement wins 55 Second Challenge

Last night, Moonee Valley hosted this season’s  eighth heat of the Essendon Mazda 55 Second Challenge over 955 metres. Rapidement had drawn gate nine in the ten horse field. Dean Yendall was instructed to urge her forward in the early stages to hopefully take up a forward role.

Dean did just that but beneath him the rest of the field were displaying early pace. Rapidement was in danger of being caught wide, and so the experienced jockey took matters in to his own hand. He allowed the others to push up and the grey mare settled in an uncustomary role at the rear of the field.

Along the fence, Dean rode for luck – and got it. Others were taken wider and Rapidement made up ground at the turn. She continued to close in the straight and pushed out to claim the lead fifty metres from home.

She won in a time of 55.96 seconds, less than half a second outside the fastest time for the season to date.

“She couldn’t keep up with” explained Dean Yendall about the mare’s performance during the early stages of the race.

“It was an excellent ride,” said trainer Ricky Maund after the win, “It might not have gone the way we planned – but if Dean went forward he would have been posted six

wide and from there she wouldn’t have had a chance. They go a lot faster at this level.”

“The mare has pulled up a treat” said Andy Taylor who saddled up the mare on the day. “You wouldn’t have known she went around.”

Ricky agreed. “She’s bright. She got off the float at Corinella after the return trip and started running around like a two year old – I think she’s pretty happy with herself”

It was Rapidement’s sixth win and took her career earnings to $113,000.

Lonaro Moves into Top Gear

Trainer Neville Saunders entered Lonaro in a Class 3 1350metre race at Doomben last Wednesday. From gate four Jacque Brown gave him the perfect ride. She positioned the gelding beautifully on the fence slightly better than midfield in running and after turning peeled out behind the faltering leader to claim the lead. Lonaro was still strong on the line winning by 0.8 length.  It was the gelding’s first city win and followed a third at his previous start at Toowoomba. It was his fourth career win and took his earnings to more than $40,000.

Neville praised the ride of the inform apprentice after the race. “It was a faultless ride by Jacque. Lonaro only had to go around one horse”.

Lonaro is by Australia’s reigning champion sire and champion race horse – Lohnro.

Due to the pending restructure of Lauriston’s operations in Toowoomba, Lonaro is being offered for sale.

Rhodehaven Goes Back to Back

Just a day after Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm’s Levant won at Pakenham on Friday Rhodehaven made it back to back wins when he pounced late to claim the second last race at Dunkeld on Saturday – a 1000 metre 0-58 rating worth $12,000. Trained by Craig Conron and ridden by Damian Lane, Rhodehaven was the race favourite. Rhodehaven was bred at Lauriston and is the third foal from Orpenella to race. All are winners. Orpenella has a yearling colt by Holy Roman Emperor, who will be presented as part Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm’s Adelaide Magic Millions yearling draft in Adelaide in March 2012.

Earlier in the day a Lauriston Thoroughbred two year old made his debut. Trainer Ricky Maund was pleased how Timely Truce had progressed since finishing third in his trial at Cranbourne. Ricky nominated him to the black type, listed $100,000 Written Tycoon Champion Sire stakes (formerly the Merson Cooper Stakes) for 2 year olds over 1,000 metres at Sandown. Timely Truce finished second, giving him black type runner up status.  The first starter impressed jockey Craig Newitt who explained that the gelding raced maturely after being heavily buffeted on two occasions during the race.

Timely Truce is the third of three foals to race from Success Express mare Gal Express. His older siblings – Bedouin Express and Coupez Express, both won at two. Gal Express has a yearling colt by Reset. The colt will be presented as part of Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm’s Melbourne Inglis Premier Yearling draft.

Meanwhile in Queensland Neville Saunders trained Canadian Joy was a comfortable winner at Gatton in a 1,100 metre class 3. With Norifumi Yamada on board, Canadian Joy was doing his best on the line. It was the fourth win for the gelding and took his career earnings beyond $60,000. The win gave Neville Saunders a double for the week after Equissential won at Eagle Farm last Wednesday.
