Making his second start for Phillip Stokes, Nostradamus scored a hard-fought win in Saturday’s Group III Hughes Limos R N Irwin Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville.

Ridden by Dom Tourneur, Nostradamus came with a rattling finish from well back in the field to defeat I Am Gypsy (I Am Invincible) by a long-head with Runway Star (Northern Meteor) one and a quarter-length back in third.

It was his first win for the 4yo entire since he captured the Group III Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) twelve months ago when trained by Team Hawkes.

His overall record stands at 4 wins and 2 seconds from 18 starts for earnings of $394,030.

A first crop son of the top-class stallion Medaglia D’Oro (USA), Nostradamus earned the honour of becoming the first southern hemisphere-bred stakes-winner for the son of El Prado when he defeated Washington Heights, Law and Wandjina in the Group III San Domenico Stakes at Rosehill Gardens back in August 2014.

Now with several prominent Victorian Stud’s including Rosemont, Lauriston and Musk Creek in the ownership, a stud career for Nostradamus looks assured.

Bred by Ken Turner’s Almavale Bloodstock, Nostradamus was purchased by Koundouris Bloodstock for $500,000 at the 2013 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling sale.

He is a half-brother to Widden Stud’s promising young stallion Star Witness (Starcraft) who won the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes at two and the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at three before performing credibly in Europe finishing second in the Group 1 King Stand Stakes and third in the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Both are out of the Group III winner Leone Chiara (Lion Hunter), a sister to multiple Group II winner Chinchilla Rose and Group II winner and successful young stallion Ferocity, and a half-sister to Listed stakes-winner Chiaramonte (Redoute’s Choice).

Leone Chiara has an unraced 2yo Sepoy filly named Princess Wildfire who failed to make her $1 million reserve at the 2015 Easter Yearling sale and a yearling Sepoy colt that came up short of his $250,000 reserve at this year’s Easter Yearling sale.

After foaling a colt by Sebring last spring, Leone Chiara was bred back to Widden Stud’s Golden Slipper winner.

Four Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm bred horses won this weekend. Finke and Gallant Express combined for a double at Alice Springs, Rapid Link scored at big odds on Geraldton Gold Cup Day, while Cosmic Kheleyf landed at Port Augusta.

Finke (3g Turffontein x Bloomin’ Mavellous) was sent out as $1.70 favourite in the feature $50,000 Northern Territory Guineas in Alice Springs yesterday. Brendon Davis was back on board and ensured the 3yo stayed out of trouble by pushing forward in the early stages to settle just outside the leader. Brendon made his move at the 600 metres. Only Eighteen Bombers gave chase.  Finke won by more than 4 lengths.

Finke’s picket fence keeps growing. It was his sixth win in a row with a combined margin of 17.7 lengths. The three year old who was sold as a yearling (pictured) by Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm at Inglis’ VOBIS Gold sale for $5,000 has now raked in prize money of more than $100,000. He remains undefeated in the Northern Territory for trainer Gary Clarke.

Gallant Express as a yearling

Earlier in the same day another Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm bred saluted. It was Gallant Express’s (5g Reset x Gal Express) first start in his new stable for trainer Dick Leech and his first in the Northern Territory. With Graham Watson riding he did his best work late to pick up The Hummel and claim victory in the 1,100metre sprint by 1.5 lengths.

Cosmic Kheleyf as a yearling

Cosmic Kheleyf (5g Kheleyf x Cosmic Express) claimed his fourth career victory at Port Augusta today for trainer Scott Trenowden.  Jake Toeroek took the gelding to the wider part of the straight in the 1,100 metre event where he pounced on the leaders to win by a length.

Rapid Link as a yearling

If Rapid Link (6m Charge Forward x Inthemix) wasn’t supposed to record her fourth career win in the 7^th at Geraldton over 1,200 metres today at 50-1 then someone forgot to tell her. Simone Altieri settled the mare superbly in the box seat and managed to run down race leader Energy Boy by the closest of margins. Trainer Jodie Liakousis presented two horses only on Geraldton Gold Cup day – and both won. Hovercraft won the third by 2 lengths.

Jocasta’s (3f Choisir x Saratoga) debut run over 1,000 metres last month at Cranbourne was described by the race caller as an “eye catcher”.  Although well beaten she finished impressively after a slow start.

The Corstens team chose to step her out to 1,200 in a Geelong maiden last Tuesday for her next start.

Daniel Moor did not push the 3yo filly from the wide gate and positioned her toward the back to finally settle three wide with cover in running. Rounding the field after the turn Jocasta let down with an encouraging burst of speed to win by a length.

Daniel explained after the race: “I decided to sit off them early and let things unfold, just to keep out of that strong wind. Once we cornered, I knew we would win easily and she didn’t let me down. She is a nice filly who put her rivals to bed in a few strides.”

Richard Laming booked Darren Gauci to ride Ultimate Doom (4g Domesday x Cosmic Express) over 2,080m at Cranbourne last Friday night. “The Gauch” had previously led all the way on the 4yo to win a similar race at the same venue earlier in the year.

Similar to the January run Darren ensured his mount was leading at the first turn and dictated terms. Approaching the 400 metre mark it appeared that Ultimate Doom had run his race as the field loomed. Darren asked his mount for another effort and switched his whip to his left hand. Ultimate Doom responded to just hold out the fast finishing Honey Steel’s Gold by the smallest of margins.

“I’m still working him out” said Richard after the race, “he is a tough horse and will get further. I like him but he does have some tricks. Darren seems to work well with him”

Speedy filly Typecast made it back to back wins when she strolled away with the $40,000 McGrath Estate Agents Benchmark 67 Handicap (1250m) at Canterbury on February 17.

Ridden by Blake Shinn, the progressive daughter of Exceed And Excel out of Show Stealer jumped positively from an outside barrier and took a sit behind the leader before taking aim down the straight to pull away for an easy 1.5 length victory ahead of nearest rival Bubbleberry.

With two wins from four career starts including a third in her maiden race to black type winner Lake Geneva, co-trainer Peter Snowden said Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock’s three-year-old is an Exceed And Excel ‘who goes well’ as she continues to lift the bar.

“She was very strong late and pulled away in the end which was really pleasing to see because there’s a bunch of excited owners here today,” said Snowden.

“She’s improving every time she steps out and two wins from four starts is a great start to her career.

“She’s one of the Exceed And Excel’s who goes well, so who knows, she could make a stakes winning filly down the track but it’s just one race at a time.”

Shinn, who has ridden Typecast previously in a winning trial and at her second raceday start, said she’s developing along nicely.

“Peter and Paul placed her perfectly today and she’s furnishing nicely in a racehorse.

“As soon as the gates opened I had to go forward because she jumped so well and I wanted to make the most out of the opportunity.

“That’s the good thing about riding for Peter and Paul, they leave you with the discretion to make decisions and she’s heading in the right direction.”

Gai Waterhouse’s Golden Slipper team has been reduced by one with injury ruling Global Glamour out of the rest of the autumn.

Bloodstock agent James Bester, representing the All About The Girls Syndicate, said the filly had pulled up a little shin sore from her debut win at Kembla Grange on January 30.

“We were hoping she’d come through that but, sadly, we’ve had to put her by for now,” Bester said in a statement on Friday.

“We’ll now have to wait until spring to see the best of her. But we’re confident she’ll bounce back with a bang.”

Global Glamour had been a $15 chance in Slipper markets with Waterhouse drawing comparisons to last year’s runner-up English, winner of the corresponding Kembla Grange maiden on debut.

English has not raced since her midfield finish in the Sires’ Produce Stakes in April but showed she was primed for her return by beating reigning Slipper favourite Capitalist in a barrier trial at Randwick on Friday.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained Capitalist led the trial with English edging him out on the line.

The unbeaten colt will have his first start since his Magic Millions win when he runs in the Todman Stakes on March 5.

Capitalist is the TAB’s $3.50 Slipper favourite ahead of Extreme Choice at $8 and Astern at $11 with a group on $15 including the Waterhouse-trained Scarlet Rain.

Astern can further cement his claims with victory in Saturday’s Silver Slipper at Rosehill for which he is the odds-on favourite.

Twelve Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm bred horses won a total of thirteen races during January making it one of the most successful months for the farm.

February has continued in a similar manner. Winona Costin partnered Typecast (3f. Exceed And Excel x Show Stealer) in the first at Wyong last Thursday. Well out of their ground at the turn, Typecast displayed a late turn of foot to just edge out Libby Tickets in an exciting finish. Typecast was an $80,000 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale purchase from Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm for Darren Dance’s Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock. The three year filly is the first Lauriston bred horse to be trained by Peter & Paul Snowden.

Gai Waterhouse wrote in her Friday blog: “This weekend, a filly I am very excited about named Global Glamour (Star Witness x Spectacula) is making her debut. Gai was right. Global Glamour (2f. Star Witness x Spectacular) did not win as if she was Amelia’s Dream who won by 10 lengths on debut. Global Glamour won by 6.3 lengths. Although slightly tardy away, Paul King pushed Global Glamour to take up a forward position along the rail. After straightening and steering to the middle of the track, King pressed the go button. Gai Waterhouse’s English won the same race last year. She went on to win the Group 2 Reisling Stakes in her next start and followed that run in The Golden Slipper where she finished second. The TAB responded to Global Glamour’s win by reducing her Golden Slipper market price to $26.

Global Glamour was purchased just over a year ago $65,000 at the 2015 Gold Coast Magic Millions by astute buyer James Bester for the high profile It’s All About The Girls syndicate. The syndicate is made up of 40 ladies from around the world.

Global Glamour is the third 2yo filly from Lauriston Thoroughbred 2013 crop to race this season. The Seductress trained by Jason Warren has won twice (at Bendigo and Caulfield), while Ciaron Maher’s Emphatically finished runner up in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview on Australia Day and third in the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes.

Yesterday Blue Diamond (5g. Tale Of The Cat x Mighty Atalanta) claimed his seventh victory at Singapore for trainer Alwin Tan. Jockey Troy See was positive from the outset in the 1,100 metre race but lost his whip during the run. Blue Diamond responded well to hands and heels riding and won by more than a length. The victory increased the tally of Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm bred horse wins for January 2016 to ten – a monthly personal best for the farm.

Last Friday Darren Gauci partnered Lauriston bred Ultimate Doom (4g. Domesday x Cosmic Express) at Cranbourne over 2080 metres. It was the fourth start of Ultimate Dooms first preparation with Richard Laming. The gelding had been frustrating in his previous starts with his new trainer and so Richard engaged the experienced hoop. Richard’s instructions were very clear, “lead”. The Gauch obliged. Coming to the home turn Ultimate Doom seemed to be fading, but Darren’s class and experience told. He changed the whip to his left hand and the 4yo responded. Ultimate Doom won by more than two length an expanding his margin on the line. “He has tricks,” explained Richard Laming who plans to aim him at a Moonee Valley staying race in a fortnight. The following day  Wales with Steven King on board completed a Richard Laming trained weekend double after winning in impressive fashion over the 2,040 metre trip at Moonee Valley.
