Glamorous Victory In Flight Stakes

global-glamour-upset-yankee-rose-to-claim-g1-honours-1475303869_308x240 The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Global Glamour (Star Witness) led from barrier to post under Tim Clark to take out the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick on Saturday.

The filly, who was bought out of the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $65,000, had run third in the Furious Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and sixth in the Tea Rose Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) so far this preparation but took a big step forward on her first attempt at a mile.

Alert from the gates, Clark set a steady early pace aboard the keen-going Global Glamour who quickened impressively off the home bend to open up a four length gap on her rivals.

Yankee Rose (All American) came from out of the pack to try and run the winner down, but the $2.05 favourite could only get to within half a length at the line, with Sezanne (More Than Ready) a further two lengths behind in third.

The result provided co-trainer Bott with his first victory at the top level since he began training in partnership with Waterhouse at the start of the season.

“It’s sensational,” Bott said. “It’s an incredible feeling and there are so many emotions going through me.”It is hard to describe. It is a very good feeling and one I will cherish forever.”

A Group One victory was also a long time coming for Clark, whose last top flight success came in Hong Kong in 2013. “It’s been a while.” Clark said. “My last Group One was in Hong Kong on It Has To Be You.”

Clark praised Waterhouse and Bott for choosing to fit the filly with a barrier blanket in an attempt to keep her calm in the preliminaries. “The start was all important today. It was a masterstroke by Gai and Adrian to put the barrier blanket on her. It helped keep her calm,” he said. “She began pretty well and in the small field I was able to control it. “Even though she was still going a bit keen within herself through the run she wasn’t going that quick. It allowed her to have a great turn of foot. “I knew it would take a good one to run me down.”

James O’Brien of Global Glamour’s breeders Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm told ANZ Bloodstock News that the result was a fillip to the Victorian breeding operation. “It’s absolutely fantastic and very exciting for everyone involved,” O’Brien said. “(She has) a weak pedigree page but we reasoned that she was good enough on type to get to the Magic Millions. “I’m thrilled because it’s the first horse we’ve ever had with Gai Waterhouse and she’s now a Group One winner. It’s just such a thrill for the farm.”

Lauriston Thoroughbreds raced Global Glamour’s dam Spectacula who won two races and $93,090 in prize money. “She was a Moonee Valley winner and was very fast. She ran just a fraction under $100,000 but succumbed to a leg issue so was lightly raced. We raced her ourselves and she showed enough on the track to breed on with her. I have had an affinity with Success Express line mares, we raced Gold Edition,” continued O’Brien.

“(Spectacula) is probably a week away from foaling to Street Boss. This year I was tossing up with Nostradamus because he’s so closely related to Star Witness but I made the decision after Global Glamour’s Group Two placing to send the mare back to Star Witness, so she will go back there. We’ll have a full relation to Global Glamour and we’ll see if she can do it again.”

Spectacular has a colt by Reset before being covered by Street Boss (Street Cry) last October. “We’ve had good success racing but to now have good successbreeding is fantastic for us,” O’Brien added.

Jockey Blake Shinn was a little disappointed with the performance of ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Yankee Rose, who he felt had enough time to overhaul the winner. “I had a pretty good run throughout and thought I was close enough approaching the turn,” Shinn said. “I was waiting for that electrifying turn of foot that she can possess. She was a little one-paced at the top of the straight but she was great through the line.”

Global Glamour (3 f ex Spectacula by Testa Rossa) has won two of her four starts for total prize money of $338,500 and, in taking out the Flight Stakes, she became the Widden Stud-based Star Witness’ (Starcraft) first Group One winner.

One of four named foals out of Testa Rossa (Perugino) mare Spectacula, Global Glamour is a half-sister to the placed gelding Harmeal(Al Maher). Her family can be traced further back to the Group Three winner Sam Sung A Song (Timber Country), while her fifth dam, the stakes winning Apollua (King Apollo) is the fourth dam to the Listed winner and Group Three placed Rocket To Glory (Shovhog).

Anna Seitz put together the syndicate that races Global Glamour, which consists of almost 40 women from around the world. “It’s like a dream come true,” said Seitz from Kentucky yesterday after the filly’s win. “We are just having the best fun. We spoke yesterday and thought if she could run third and be Group One placed it would be incredible – but to win, it’s amazing.” Seitz said that the syndicate was put together for the female ownership promotion, Magic Millions Racing Women.

“I was on the bus one morning going to the sale and I was chatting to Elaine Lawlor (of Goffs) and we decided to find a horse and form a syndicate to take part in the promotion. “What a wonderful idea from Katie Page-Harvey – the world had never seen anything like it. Our bloodstock manager James Bester was then left in charge of finding the right horse. “We picked out a few and tried to buy an Uncle Mo filly who turned out to be Conchita, and then James told me to come down on the Saturday night after the races and look at a Star Witness filly.”

Finke continues hot streak in NT Derby

RACING fans were treated to yet another tremendous day of action on Day 4 of the Darwin Cup Carnival at Fannie Bay yesterday.

Having won seven straight since arriving in the Territory, star three-year-old Finke had captured most of the headlines leading into the feature event, the $135,000 Ladbrokes NT Derby (2000m).

The pressure was on Finke to make it eight straight and thankfully for punters and connections the race went to script. Sent out a warm favourite, the Gary Clarke-trained gelding jumped smartly but was forced to sit three wide on the speed in the early stages.

Shortly thereafter, jockey Brendon Davis allowed Finke a little rein and the poster boy of NT racing rolled to the front.

Finke relaxed into his familiar rhythm as Davis endeavoured to grab some cheap sections down the back straight.

Second favourite Abu Dhabi (Kim Gladwin), just as he did in the Darwin Guineas (1600m), was again forced to travel three deep with no cover as the field settled down.

No sooner had Finke begun to dictate terms he was joined by Paul Shiers on Jigalong, who strode alongside to mount a challenge.

Shiers, believing that making it a true staying test might be his best chance of cracking Finke, applied the blowtorch as field made their approach towards the home turn.

Just as he has done on many occasions Finke dug deep and found another gear and strode away from his rivals as the field cornered for home.

The Lloyd Kennewell trained Abu Dhabi from Adelaide rallied and set out after Finke but the son of Turrfontein would not be denied going on to win by a length and a quarter in the run to the line.

Abu Dhabi held down second in a repeat of the exacta from the Darwin Guineas and the Phillip Cole trained filly The Wild Side (Raymond Vigar) finished third.

“That was a really good win” trainer Gary Clarke said.

“There was a bit of cat and mouse going on there in the early stages, and he (Finke) had to do some extra work but he toughed it out real well.”

By winning the Darwin Guineas and NT Derby, Finke has now captured the first two legs of the Ladbrokes $100,000 Triple Crown bonus.

The third leg is the Carlton Mid Darwin Cup (2000m) on August 1.

“He’s not a stunning horse to look at but he keeps getting it done — I haven’t found the bottom of him yet,” Clarke said. “I will wait to see how he pulls up and make a decision on whether we press on to the Cup come Wednesday.”

Meanwhile, the Neil Dyer trained five-year-old gelding Royal Request booked his place in the Darwin Cup field on the first Monday in August by taking out the Million Dollar Fish Buntine Handicap (1900m).

Royal Request, who finished second behind Lightinthenite in the Cup last year, beat Saturday Sorcerer (Vanessa Arnott) and Moon Devil (Carl Spry) to make it back to back wins in the Buntine.

In other highlights yesterday, the Merv Rumble trained Cadman again gave them a start and a beating in the Signcity Trobis 3YO (1200m),

Gary Clarke’s Handsome Tycoon — who won the Pioneer Sprint (1200m) in April during the Alice Springs Cup Carnival — thumped a strong field of sprinters in the Ladbrokes Odds Boost WFA (1200m) in a performance that will surely see the son of Not A Single Doubt be installed favourite for the Palmeston Sprint (1200m) on July 30.

Finke Cruises to Victory in Darwin Guineas

Trainer Gary Clarke kicked off the Darwin Cup Carnival in style at a buzzing Fannie Bay yesterday.

Clarke’s Finke — shooting for seven straight victories since arriving in the Territory — toyed with his rivals, going on to win the Darwin Guineas (1600m) by more than four lengths, ahead of Abu Dhabi and Worthington.

The gelding’s outstanding performance did not surprise Clarke in the slightest.

“I have a high opinion of the horse,” Clarke told the Sunday Territorian.

“The only concern was being first-up over the mile, but I needn’t have worried.”

Jockey Brendon Davis, knowing he was on the best three-year-old horse, was positive out of the gates aboard Finke, and after the first furlong had the punters’ elect travelling in a lovely rhythm in second position.

His main danger in the betting, Abu Dhabi, was forced to face the breeze three wide settling down.

Approaching the home turn Finke was the only one punters wanted to be on, as he clicked into another gear to win with astonishing ease.

Abu Dhabi’s effort to run second was sound after doing plenty of work in the run. Finke’s next assignment will be the NT Derby (2000m) on July 16.

Don’t Finke twice – he’s the Winx of NT

Article sourced from G1X by Trent Masenhelder

With nine wins on the bounce, six of them at Group 1 level, Winx has rightly earned the title of Australia’s latest star of the turf.

And just as Chris Waller’s champion middle-distance mare has been destroying her opposition and adding more pickets to the fence, so too has a sprinter – sold for just $5,000 – in the Northern Territory.

The Gary Clarke-trained Finke will be gunning for a seventh-consecutive victory when he steps out in Saturday’s $70,000 Darwin Guineas at Fannie Bay. The 1600m race is the first leg of the Triple Crown, which carries a $100,000 bonus.

“He’s been a really good little horse up here. Paul Denton rode him in a lot of his trackwork and he told me, ‘he’s a really nice horse – he’ll go a long way’. His judgment was right.

“He’s got a task ahead of him this weekend. He raced himself high up in the ratings which meant he didn’t qualify for the lead-up races to the Guineas.

“In saying that, he’s as fit as I can get him without having a race under his belt. He’s had a few trials.”

A three-year-old gelding by Blue Gum Farm sire Turffontein, Finke was offered by Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm at the 2014 Inglis VOBIS Yearling Sale. He first raced in South Australia under the care of Kristi Evans, where he was unplaced in four starts. Since venturing north, Finke has improved his record to six wins from 10 starts and $107,670 in earnings.

“I sent him down to Kristi to be properly educated. There are no two-year-old races in Darwin, so we thought he could have a few starts in Adelaide,” Clarke said.

“I wanted him back for the three-year-old season in Darwin. I just put one hurdle at a time in front of him and he kept jumping them.

“I thought he might be a bit brilliant to run a mile, but as I’ve stretched him out he looks like he might be a better stayer than a sprinter.”

If all goes to plan, Finke is likely to head to the second leg of the Triple Crown – the NT Derby on July 16.

Trainer Tony Vasil revels in return to racetrack as General Truce thrives down Flemington straight

Article by Michael Manley from Herald Sun June 11, 2016

GTKevin O’Brien, Andrew Mallyon and Tony Vasil

TONY Vasil made a triumphant return to training and landed a plunge with his first runner in 2½ years when General Truce (8g Brief Truce x General Resolve by General Nediym) took out the Jezabeel Handicap (1000m) at Flemington.

Vasil described making a winning return as “a bit of a fairytale”.

Only 20 minutes earlier, he had been taking great pride in seeing Under The Louvre — a horse he purchased and trained until he quit racing due to depression in March 2014 — winning the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap in Brisbane.

Shortly after, General Truce delivered a more immediate success for Vasil to savour.

GT“To come back as a winner with a longshot is pretty satisfying,” he said.

Vasil admitted that he had taken the $81 on offer Friday morning at the Brighton TAB after he had breakfast.

“I was more than happy with how he felt under me last Saturday and he felt even better last Tuesday.

“He didn’t feel to me like an $81 chance. I thought he’s right in the mix.”

General Truce’s official fluctuations were $31 into $18 on course.

The 12-time Group 1-winning trainer, who counts Elvstroem and Haradasun among his champions, only regained his licence two weeks ago.

Vasil said coming back so early was not part of his plans.

“I was at the Gold Coast Yearling sales just poking about when I bumped into James O’Brien and he asked me … would you be interested in training my old sprinter?” he said.

“I was just planning to get a couple of young horses and dabble with them,” Vasil said.

Vasil said he could have a stable of 30 horses tomorrow if he wanted to but he didn’t want to go down that path.

“I’ve got no ambition to get together a big team. I could click my fingers and have 30 in work tomorrow but I don’t want to do that,” he said.

“I just want to put my big toe in the water. Maybe in six months times I might revisit things. I’ve been very fortunate over the years to have success at this point in life and I just want to enjoy it.”

General Truce ($18) defeated Bullpit ($4) by a length and a quarter with Alberto Magic ($10) a nose away third.
