This weaning is a powerful September born filly from the first
crop of Group 1 Caulfield Guineas winner, Shooting To Win (by Northern Meteor). Shooting To Win’s female line descends directly from Cotehele House, dam of Commands. Commands is also the sire of this foal’s dam, Amarazetti. Amarazetti, was a 2yo sprinting black type performer who won on five occasions. She is the dam of lightly raced 2yo Caulfield winner Ms Mazetti who split Bullpit and Rich Enuff on debut.

Lot 288        B          Colt         Toronado                   Demasheen

This impressive colt is from the first crop of Toranado, a dual Group 1 winning son of Champion Sire, High Chaparral. His dam is 2yo city winner Demasheen, a daughter of champion sire Fastnet Rock from 2yo black type performing mare Shimo Star (by Centaine). This colt is bred on the same cross (High Chaparral to Fastnet Rock) as Group 1 All Aged Stakes winner Tivaci, Omei Sword and New Performer.

Lot 310        B             Colt        Toronado                          Empowering

Lot 511        Ch           Filly        Starspangledbanner       Partygoer

This flashy filly is a daughter of Royal Ascot Golden Jubilee winner Starspangledbanner , a son of Choisir. Starspangledbanner’s progeny have performed admirably from limited opportunity and include Champion 2yo colt in France, The Wow Signal. Partygoer, by Mossman, was a 2yo city winner and successful race filly who won $162,000 prizemoney. She produced lightly raced Cailin Miss who won by more than 2 lengths at listed level as a 2yo.

Iron Lotus Wins at Alice

The Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm bred and cleverly named 2yo filly Iron Lotus (2f Turffontein x Blazing Glory by Bianconi) took her place in the first at Alice Springs yesterday. It was the Lisa Lefoe trained filly’s second race start after finishing runner up on debut (beating the third horse by more than seven lengths). Apprentice Kate Brooks was positive aboard the $1.90 favourite from the outset ensuring that Iron Lotus would lead the field. They were never troubled and won the 1,000m race comfortably.

Jocasta Breaks Through

Jocasta (4m Choisir x Saratoga by Show A Heart) has shown a propensity to be slow away at the start of each race. From the six starts this year she finished runner up on five occasions – three of them by a margin of 0.2 lengths or less. Her racing pattern and luck seemed mutually exclusive. She missed by the smallest of margins at Seymour – beating the third horse by five lengths.

Following the Seymour race trainer Troy Corstens claimed: “She has been very but she is thriving. I think back ups will suit her”. Troy identified a race at Wangaratta just eight days following Jocasta’s Seymour run as a suitable next start. Stable rider and apprentice Liam Riordan was selected to ride. He knew the mare. He knew her ability and he knew her quirks.

As usual she was the slowest to begin but despite being on the $1.70 favourite and with the entire field in front of him Liam did not panic. He gave Jocasta a soft run to the turn and patiently waited for an opportunity. When a gap presented he punched her through. In a heartbeat the race was over. Jocasta won by more than two lengths ridden hands and heels to the line.

Lauriston bred Undoubtable Miss wins Adelaide’s MM 2yo Classic

No Doubting This Miss in Adelaide Classic

Source: Magic Millions

Quality juvenile filly Undoubtable Miss will be set for Group One races in the spring carnival after she scored a stylish win in today’s $200,000 Magic Millions Adelaide 2YO Classic (1200m) at Morphettville.

Facing the starter for the third time, Undoubtable Miss ($3) produced a strong burst of speed in the straight to win South Australia’s richest juvenile race by a length.

Locally prepared younger Danger Deal ($12) tried hard over the concluding stages to snatch second, a half neck ahead of the favourite and proven stakes performer Spoils ($2.50 fav).

Undoubtable Miss, a $90,000 Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase from the draft of Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm, is prepared at Cranbourne by Robbie Griffiths who was suitably impressed with the performance.

“We were contemplating going to the Sires’ Produce on Saturday, but when this race looked more suitable and wasn’t a jump in distance, we thought this was the best race for her,” Griffiths said.

“It’s a great series the Magic Millions series and the hardest part is getting a horse good enough to run in the series.”

“But this filly has always shown great talent, she was very good her first start at Ballarat and that form’s been franked with Ducimus running so well, and then she was good at Sandown so to come here and win was a great result.”

For the win Griffiths scooped a $10,000 trainer bonus comprising a credit voucher to spend at the 2017 Adelaide Yearling Sale starting tonight and continuing through to Wednesday.

A daughter of former Magic Millions graduate and leading sire Not a Single Doubt, Undoubtable Miss has now earned over $153,000 for her large group of jubilant connections.

Undoubtable Miss is one of two named foals for the winning Tobougg mare Spy Catcher – a half sister to the five time winner and stakes performed Rendzina.

It is the family further back of Oakleigh Plate winner Khaptingly and fellow stakes winners Khaptivaan, Battlefield, Sain Khapital and Spanish Bay.

Griffiths’ Miss grabs Millions money

Source: RACING.COM by Brad Bishop

He’s renowned as a trainer who knows how to get his hands on VOBIS money, but Robbie Griffiths turned his attention to the Magic Millions scheme on Monday.

The Cranbourne trainer produced Undoubtable Miss to win the $210,000 Magic Millions Adelaide 2YO Classic on the Adelaide Cup Day card.

The 1200-metre event is restricted to horses bought out of a Magic Millions sale ring and the daughter of Not A Single Doubt, who cost $90,000 at last year’s Gold Coast sale, earned more than her purchase price with the strong win.

“We were contemplating going to the Sires’ Produce on Saturday, but when this race looked more suitable and wasn’t a jump in distance, we thought this was the best race for her,” Griffiths said.

“It’s a great series the Magic Millions series and the hardest part is getting a horse good enough to run in the series.

“But this filly has always shown great talent, she was very good her first start at Ballarat and that form’s been franked with Ducimus running so well, and then she was good at Sandown so to come here and win was a great result.”

Undoubtable Miss, the $3 second favourite who was ridden by Noel Callow, registered her first victory at start number three when she scored by one length from Danger Deal ($12), with $2.50 favourite Spoils a long neck back third. The winner’s time was 1:10.4.

The victory followed a narrow second placing at Sandown on February 15, with her only other start a long neck second to subsequent Listed winner and Group 3 Pago Pago runner-up Ducimus.

Griffiths is excited to see what Undoubtable Miss is achieving as a juvenile as he always believed she would make a quality three-year-old filly.

“How far we go in this prep is up to her recovery, but we think in the spring she’ll be a filly that’ll be an ideal Thousand Guineas filly.

“A lot of fillies in the family have got out to 1600, 2000 metres, so I think she’ll get out to a trip later.”

O’Brien re-elected as President of Victorian Breeders

james-obrien-lauristonThe continuation of growth in the Victorian breeding sector is the number one item in James O’Brien’s priorities, re-elected President of Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria (TBV).

The TBV Committee, including newly elected members Caroline Duddy and Matthew Tillett, met yesterday with James elected unopposed.

James, who manages the family operation of Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm at Corinella, said he was honoured to continue as TBV President.

“The Victorian thoroughbred breeding industry is on an upwards path. There has been significant international investment in Victoria as well as ongoing investment upgrading by established breeders,” James said.

“And the racetrack success reflects this growth with no less than 8 Group 1 winners this season bred or sired in Victoria.

“It is critical that TBV continues to work closely with racing authorities, sales companies, the state government and other key stakeholders to maximise the returns of Victorian breeders in the sales ring and on the racetrack.

“A key part of this is ensuring VOBIS, the nation’s best breeding scheme, is not just maintained, but also enhanced.

“There are also a number of other keys issues for breeders including horse welfare and investment in research and development among others that the TBV Committee will continue to focus on over the next 12 months and beyond.”

Global? This Glamour is a Victorian

She was “down from Sydney” and franked the strong form north of the border with her Thousand Guineas win, but Global Glamour’s Group 1 win at Caulfield technically came on home turf.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Global Glamour was born at Lauriston Farm, Corinella under the care of Victorian breeder James O’Brien, before being sold for $65,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions on the Gold Coast to syndicator James Bester.

O’Brien explained he matched up Lauriston’s broodmare Spectacula with sire Star Witness, due to a Lionhunter-Success Express cross he also discovered was present in the bloodlines of two-time Group 1 winner Gold Edition, who raced in the green-and-orange Lauriston checks.

“Absolutely fantastic – ecstatic for the farm, but ecstatic for connections,” O’Brien said, of the whirlwind seven days that saw Global Glamour win two Group 1s in two different states seven days apart.

“Definitely [the best] from what we’ve bred, to get to the racetrack, she’s been absolutely outstanding.

“I’ve enjoyed seeing her toughness, so it’s great to create a tough filly like that.”

WATCH: Global Glamour’s Thousand Guineas win

O’Brien said he felt he had the edge on recognising the similarity to the breeding page of Gold Edition, who not only won an Ascot Vale Stakes (now Coolmore Stud Stakes) and a Manikato Stakes, but was runner-up in the Newmarket and Stradbroke Handicaps, and The Age Classic (now Darley Classic).

“When I’m doing the matings, and I see that cross, it lights up,” O’Brien said.

“When probably no-one else would recognise that, but for me, Gold Edition’s been such a fantastic race filly for us that it stood out like a beacon.

“The result is a really tough, front-running filly for us, like Goldy was.

“Interesting… I think it’s more luck than class, but we got it right, so it’s good.”

Spectacula also raced in the Lauriston colours, winning two of the first seven starts of her 31-race career, and O’Brien conceded it was a gamble in breeding with her – one that has paid some dividend in the past 10 days.

“The breeding page was a bit light, but she impressed us enough on the racetrack to retire to the barn,” he noted.

“Fortunately we’ve made the right move by the look of it.”

And does success breed success? Well, O’Brien certainly hopes so.

Spectacula is due to give birth to a Street Boss foal any day now, and the mare is set to visit Star Witness again for a full sibling to Global Glamour.

Global Glamour Shows Her Brilliance To Land Thousand Guineas-Flight Stakes Double

Global Glamour (Star Witness) has made it two Group One wins in seven days after impressively leading all the way in the Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) at Caulfield yesterday. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained three-year-old employed the same tactics at Randwick last Saturday to win the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and again proved she is the dominant filly at Caulfield.

Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, who replaced jockey Tim Clark who rode in Sydney yesterday, Global Glamour ($4.40) defeated I Am A Star (I Am Invincible) ($21) by a length with a half-neck back to third-placed Whispering Brook (Hinchinbrook) ($8.50). The Chris Waller-trained Foxplay (Foxwedge) ($4.20 favourite) finished a length and a half behind Whispering Brook in fourth, while there was three quarters of a length back to Harlow Gold (Tavistock) in fifth place.

Bott said Global Glamour was a tough filly who handled the quick back up well. “It’s a tough ask and I think she’s a very special filly,” Bott said after Global Glamour joined Guelph (Exceed And Excel) (2013) and Dashing Eagle (1996) (Danehill) as the most recent to claim the Flight StakesThousand Guineas double.

“To do what she did last week then get on a float and come down to Melbourne and back it up in her first start at a difficult track, she’s a special filly. “Full credit to the filly. She’s come a long way. She’s racing a lot more seasoned now and has put it all together. We saw that last week and she’s improved again.”

For Waterhouse, it was the first Thousand Guineas success of her decorated training career. “She has come down here and she hasn’t missed a beat,” Waterhouse said. “And I said to Kerrin ‘all you’ve got to do is just replicate what Tim Clark did last week’. “It’s so exciting.”

Bott, 29, said he was loving the opportunity of training in partnership with Waterhouse. “She’s an incredible person to share the success with,” he said. McEvoy, who won the Thousand Guineas on Guelph, said he was confident the filly would find late the way she travelled throughout the race. “I knew I was in a nice rhythm and she’d have a kick when I asked her,” McEvoy said. “And the rest is history.”

Waller said Tea Rose Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner Foxplay was likely to be spelled instead of continuing on with her spring campaign. “We’ll wait and see how she pulls up but I think (it will be the end of the preparation),” Waller told Racing.com. “I think she’s going to be an exciting horse in the autumn. “She’s not overly big and I’d hate to go to the well one time too many (times) so I’d imagine she’ll spell but I’ll talk to the owners first.”

Meanwhile, the Lindsay Park-trained Harlow Gold is on track for the Victoria Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m), according to jockey Regan Bayliss. “That was a terrific run. She got to the outside and was really strong through the line and 100 metres after the line she was in front so I’m looking forward to the Oaks,” Bayliss told Racing.com. Dwayne Dunn said there were no excuses for seventh placegetter Missrock (Fastnet Rock) ($9). “She had a nice run in transit and I was trying to follow the favourite but when you look at the race the horses that were in the first five or six were that ones that were there at the finish,” Dunn told Racing.com. Rider Chris Parnham said the Henry Dwyer-trained Leotie (Darci Brahma) ($15) might need a spell. “She wasn’t the same horse today,” Parnham told Racing.com. “She was a bit flat and she’s probably looking for a break now. I doubt the setback she had was ideal for her.”

Waterhouse and Bott were contemplating what to do next with Global Glamour, with the option of freshening her up for the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) at the Gold Coast in January or spelling her for the Coolmore Classic (registered as the TAD Kennedy Stakes) (Gr 1, 1500m) at Rosehill in the autumn. “There are a couple of options – maybe the Coolmore Classic – the 1500 metre race for fillies and mares and she’s a Magic Millions horse and all of the ladies from around the world can catch up again there perhaps,” Waterhouse said.

Global Glamour (3 f ex Spectacula by Testa Rossa) has won three of her five starts for total prize money of $641,500 and is the sole Group One winner for her Widden Stud-based sire Star Witness (Starcraft). Star Witness also produced Schillaci Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) winning three-year-old Star Turn at Caulfield and debut juvenile winner She’s Our Star at Doomben yesterday.

Global Glamour is one of four named foals out of Testa Rossa (Perugino) mare Spectacula, Global Glamour is a half-sister to the placed gelding Harmeal (Al Maher). Her family can be traced further back to the Group Three winner Sam Sung A Song (Timber Country), while her fifth dam, the stakes winning Apollua (King Apollo) is the fourth dam to the Listed winner and Group Three placed Rocket To Glory (Shovhog).

Global Glamour was bred and sold by Victoria’s Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm, with the filly purchased by bloodstock agent James Bester for $65,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.

“That was a great win,” Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm’s James O’Brien said to ANZ Bloodstock News. “She’s very tough and to win two Group Ones in a week in two states is incredible.” O’Brien told ANZ Bloodstock News after Global Glamour’s Flight Stakes victory that Spectacula would be covered by Star Witness this season. Star Witness, the sire of five individual stakes winners, stands at Widden Stud for a fee of $16,500 (inc GST)
