Global? This Glamour is a Victorian

She was “down from Sydney” and franked the strong form north of the border with her Thousand Guineas win, but Global Glamour’s Group 1 win at Caulfield technically came on home turf.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Global Glamour was born at Lauriston Farm, Corinella under the care of Victorian breeder James O’Brien, before being sold for $65,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions on the Gold Coast to syndicator James Bester.

O’Brien explained he matched up Lauriston’s broodmare Spectacula with sire Star Witness, due to a Lionhunter-Success Express cross he also discovered was present in the bloodlines of two-time Group 1 winner Gold Edition, who raced in the green-and-orange Lauriston checks.

“Absolutely fantastic – ecstatic for the farm, but ecstatic for connections,” O’Brien said, of the whirlwind seven days that saw Global Glamour win two Group 1s in two different states seven days apart.

“Definitely [the best] from what we’ve bred, to get to the racetrack, she’s been absolutely outstanding.

“I’ve enjoyed seeing her toughness, so it’s great to create a tough filly like that.”

O’Brien said he felt he had the edge on recognising the similarity to the breeding page of Gold Edition, who not only won an Ascot Vale Stakes (now Coolmore Stud Stakes) and a Manikato Stakes, but was runner-up in the Newmarket and Stradbroke Handicaps, and The Age Classic (now Darley Classic).

“When I’m doing the matings, and I see that cross, it lights up,” O’Brien said.

“When probably no-one else would recognise that, but for me, Gold Edition’s been such a fantastic race filly for us that it stood out like a beacon.

“The result is a really tough, front-running filly for us, like Goldy was.

“Interesting… I think it’s more luck than class, but we got it right, so it’s good.”

Spectacula also raced in the Lauriston colours, winning two of the first seven starts of her 31-race career, and O’Brien conceded it was a gamble in breeding with her – one that has paid some dividend in the past 10 days.

“The breeding page was a bit light, but she impressed us enough on the racetrack to retire to the barn,” he noted.

“Fortunately we’ve made the right move by the look of it.”

And does success breed success? Well, O’Brien certainly hopes so.

Spectacula is due to give birth to a Street Boss foal any day now, and the mare is set to visit Star Witness again for a full sibling to Global Glamour.
