Chester Manifold Stakes Plan Comes Off

Tudor CMDoug Harrison was tossing up between running Tudor at Randwick or in the Listed Chester Manifold Stakes at Flemington yesterday. After reviewing the fields, weights and track conditions Doug opted for the latter. It was a winning decision.

Tudor presentationDarren Gauci had partnered Tudor on two prior occasions and felt that removing the blinkers would help the entire to settle. The plan was to go forward as it did not look like there was too much speed in the race. The Gauch made his intentions on Tudor known early effectively discouraging others from participating in a speed battle. The rest is history.

Tudor jumped cleanly and fast. Superbly rated by Darren he was never headed. Only Decircles and Tried And Tired tried to go with him. Tudor stole a break at the turn beating off Decircles and the rest of the field leaving Tried And Tired to give chase. It was a heart in mouth moment. The Flemington straight is long and Tudor did not seem to stay the trip at his previous outing. Tried And Tired loomed but Tudor resolutely extended his neck and was dogged to the line. He won by half a length. Race Replay: Flemington R7- 16 Jan 16 Chester Manifold Stakes

The win was Tudor’s third and while finishing runner up in Group 2 company it was his first win at black type level. It increased his prizemoney earnings beyond $370,000.

Tudor - Chester ManifoldTudor, by Strategic from Encosta de Lago mare Skidoodle, was bred and is raced by Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm. Skidoodle has produced Velonski (by Falvelon) who has won six races and $140,000 and promising 2yo filly Emphatically (by Not a Single Doubt). In just her second start for trainer Ciaron Maher Emphatically finished third (beaten 0.3length) in the Listed Merson Cooper Stakes. She is being targeted at the Blue Diamond Preview for fillies at Caulfield on Australia Day.

Less than an hour later Alcobro stepped out at Morphettville over 1200 metres for trainer Richard Jolly with Jake Toeroek on. Like Tudor Alcobro led from the get-go to win by almost a length. It was Alcobro’s fourth career win and took his earnings beyond $100,000. Alcobro has previously placed at listed level. Race Replay: Morphettville R6 – 16 Jan 16

Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm bred Alcobro (Bianconi ex Tendue) is a full brother to Alcohol – a black type performer and six time winner with earnings beyond $300,000.

Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm will present a total of nine yearlings at Inglis’ upcoming Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale. Among them will be a half brother to Alcobro. The colt is by ten time Group 1 winner So You Think and will be presented as Lot 391 at the sale on Tuesday 1st March 2016. Pedigree: Inglis Premier Yearling Sale Lot 391 Bay Colt So You Think ex Tendue

Keeping count at Corinella

Lauristons-Brooke-Verwey-Mitchell-leads-the-Snitzel-–-Rapidement-filly-resizedLauriston Thoroughbreds averaged $170,000 for its yearlings at the Magic Millions and operations manager James O’Brien was also busy keeping count of the farm’s winning graduates over the weekend.

The Corinella nursery grossed $850,000 for its 5 lots on the Gold Coast topped by a $220,000 filly bought by Victorian syndicator Brad Spicer. She’s bred to fly being by Snitzel and out of Moonee Valley 55 Second Challenge winner Rapidement.

“She’s VOBIS nominated and Brad will bring her back to target all the bonus money,” O’Brien said.

“She’s an impressive filly and is bred on a similar cross to Wandjina.”

Lauriston Thoroughbreds sold a Snitzel colt (ex Paramount) to Toby Edmonds for $200,000 plus a Redoute’s Choice filly (ex Show Stealer) that Jason Warren secured for $160,000.

Show Stealer’s first foal is a 3yo Exceed And Excel filly with the Snowdens named Typecast and she was placed first-up at Hawkesbury during a short prep earlier this season.

“Jason trains the mare’s 2yo filly Conductress. She’s by Commands and Jason was keen to come back for the yearling on the strength of what she’s shown so far O’Brien said.

The latest Lauriston Thoroughbreds bred galloper heading to Hong Kong is the
Not A Single Doubt filly (ex Five Star Belle) that made $180,000 on Thursday. She’s a three-quarter sister to Warren’s promising 2yo filly The Seductress who won again at Caulfield on Saturday.

Apollo Choice (Choisir) has showcased the Lauriston Thoroughbreds brand in Hong Kong and he came within a head of winning again at Sha Tin on Saturday. He was placed in a G2 Sandown Guineas before heading off-shore to clients of David Hall.

The narrow loss didn’t knock the gloss off a wonderful week for the O’Brien family in Australia. They celebrated 4 winners in just 3 days as Godavari (r7 Mackay), Chiavari (r4 Cranbourne), The Seductress (r1 Caulfield) and Sette Bello (r1 Mornington) kept the roll going from Friday to Sunday.

The Seductress picked up $79,000 for her win the $80,000 prizemoney race. Being nominated to Super VOBIS and VOBIS Gold, she was able to almost double the usual winning prizemoney for such a race. She has now won a tick over $116,000 with half of that coming in VOBIS bonuses demonstrating the lure of racing a Victorian bred horse.

After the dust settled on a super start to the sale season, O’Brien’s buoyant mood mirrored the whole industry in his role as TBV President.

“The Gold Coast was exciting and the results were terrific. The VOBIS qualified lots attracted buyers up there and our vendors have a catalogue full of them coming up at Melbourne Premier as well as significant numbers of lots at Sydney Classic, Adelaide, Tasmania and Sydney Easter,” O’Brien said.

The Seductress Seduces Bendigo

Snitzel x Five Star Belle_18-12-2014_GEN_Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm__623Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm presented a draft of four yearlings at Magic Millions 2015 yearling sale last January. Among them was Lot 247 a Snitzel filly from Five Star Belle (pictured as a yearling). The filly was purchased by Mornington trainer Jason Warren (pictured below) and attracted a ladies ownership group to target the $500,000 Magic Millions 2yo bonus.

Jason Warren and his Snitzel filly with Belinda Palmer and Lauriston’s Brooke Vewray-Mitchell

The filly was named The Seductress and debuted at Bendigo last October. The Seductress ran a credible third behind Dalradian who went on to win the $250,000 2yo Inglis Banner at his very next start. After the race The Seductress was diagnosed with a hamstring strain and provided remedial attention and a short break.

She returned in good order and impressed Jason at her first jump out who claimed “She has improved two lengths”. The plan was to trial her again before heading to Flemington for a 2yo filly’s race on New Year’s Day. But Jason identified a Bendigo 900m 2yo race that called for late nominations after attracting only six initial nominations – all were unraced. With VOBIS bonuses the race offered a total purse of more than $50,000. Jason decided to race rather than trial.

theseductress_jakenoonanbendigo630_spAfter jumping well Jake Noonan box seated the 2yo filly before presenting her in the straight. The Seductress’s race experience told and she was strong to the line to win by more than a length. Race Replay: Bendigo 20 Dec 15 Race 1

The SeductressJason commented after the race that she still has improvement and is on target for the 2yo filly’s race at Flemington on New Year’s Day.

The Seductress was the first foal from Five Star Belle. Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm is looking forward to presenting her second foal, Lot 227, a three quarter brother to The Seductress at the Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale in three weeks.

“The colt is by boom 2yo sire Not A Single Doubt. He is a real Magic Millions type with plenty of strength and power and like his three quarter sister should be up and running early”.

Stimulatte Excites In Mindarie-Halidon Cup

StimulatteConsistent galloper Stimulatte (5g. Excites – Caffe Francais), pictured above as a yearling, was a last bound winner in Sunday’s $20,000 Mindarie-Halidon Cup over 1,800metres.

After jumping well Stimulatte settled behind the leader and raced without pressure during the early part of the race. The field made an early move around the leaders causing Stimulatte to be momentarily held up for room. At the turn apprentice Grace Willoughby steered Stimulatte into clear space along the inside. Wider out cup favourite Wicked Tycoon made his run. Clearing out from the others the two dueled down the straight with Stimulatte prevailing in a driving finish.

Race replay: 13 Sep 15 Mindarie-Halidon R5

Trainer Gordon Richards purchased the Stimulatte from Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm as a yearling for $7,000. The win was the five year old’s eighth career victory and took his prize money earnings to $177,000.

Captured Catches Attention

Lot 92,Teofilo x Encapsulate_31-01-2014_GEN_Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm__2562Captured (3f. Teofilo – Encapsulate by Encosta de Lago) pictured as a yearling, was set a tough challenge in her second start by trainer Clarry Conners. The Gosford maiden over 1,000 metre race last Thursday had also attracted the strongly hyped Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes trained Sooboog – a $1.5million full brother to Snitzerland. Captured jumped well and settled just outside the leader before drawing away at the concluding stages to win by 1.5 lengths with top apprentice Winona Costin on board.

$1.10 favourite Sooboog had been declared fit to run after becoming fractious and kicking out in the barriers. A post race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be lame in the off hind leg. Many observers commented that perhaps he should not have been allowed to start. He finished seventh.

A replay of the race can be seen here: Gosford R2 13 Aug 15

Captured was bred by Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm and purchased by Brad & Jody O’Hare for $25,000 at Magic Millions Adelaide yearling sale last year.

Equissential’s Birthday Celebrations

Trainer Neville Saunders had pencilled Equissential (8g. Jet Spur – Belle Of The Ball by Fairy King) in to run at a jump out this week but changed his mind after being advised that nominations had been extended for the Toowoomba benchmark 80 rating race over 1,200 metres last Saturday. And so August 1 was to be another day at the office for Equissential.

But work day or not the birthday boy chose to celebrate. After being allocated top weight Neville chose claiming apprentice Brendon Newport to ride and provide some weight relief. Equissential jumped well but posted three wide when he didn’t muster early speed. Brendon pushed the gelding forward to sit outside the leader. The 8yo proved too strong in the straight and drew away to win by a length.

It was the eleventh career win for the gelding and raised his prize money earnings to more than $375,000.

Yesterday Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm bred Canova (6g. Barley A Moment – Bloomin Marvellous by Desert Prince) stepped out in the third at Bairnsdale. Punters hadn’t missed his previous run, his first in two years, where he finished runner up at Swan Hill. Canova with Jamie Mott on was sent out as the race favourite. He led all the way to record a strong maiden win for owner Harley Ricketts and trainer Shea Eden.
