Richard Laming booked Darren Gauci to ride Ultimate Doom (4g Domesday x Cosmic Express) over 2,080m at Cranbourne last Friday night. “The Gauch” had previously led all the way on the 4yo to win a similar race at the same venue earlier in the year.
Similar to the January run Darren ensured his mount was leading at the first turn and dictated terms. Approaching the 400 metre mark it appeared that Ultimate Doom had run his race as the field loomed. Darren asked his mount for another effort and switched his whip to his left hand. Ultimate Doom responded to just hold out the fast finishing Honey Steel’s Gold by the smallest of margins.
“I’m still working him out” said Richard after the race, “he is a tough horse and will get further. I like him but he does have some tricks. Darren seems to work well with him”
