The strength of the Inglis Ready2Race catalogue was on show at Cranbourne today as 39 of the 59 lots to breeze broke 11 seconds.

Lot 12 (Not A Single Doubt x Allblack Lass) for Lauriston Thoroughbreds topped a professional and well-educated bunch of juveniles, breezing in 10.31secs.
The colt (pictured) was just ahead of the Kane Harris duo of Lot 136 (Sepoy x Quiet Life) and Lot 142 (Starcraft x River Express), who breezed in 10.33secs.

James O’Brien of Lauriston Thoroughbreds described his Not A Single Doubt colt as “an absolute professional’’. “He’s thrived throughout the preparation and just loves being a racehorse,’’ O’Brien said. “We were really happy with his breeze today and we’re looking forward to offering him at the Ready2Race Sale next month.’’

The Inglis breeze ups head across the Tasman on Monday (Sept 17) when Taupo hosts the New Zealand session from 12pm.

Action then moves to Sydney on Friday (Sept 21) when Warwick Farm hosts 100 juveniles breezing up from 10am.

The Inglis Ready2Race Sale is being held at Riverside Stables on Monday October 15.

It will be preceded by inspections days on Friday, Saturday and Sunday October 12-14, as well as a brunch at Riverside Stables for all interested participants on the morning of Friday October 12.

Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm have a focus on the 2-year-old market, becoming trans-Tasman vendors this year.Lauriston have been particularly successful at the Inglis Ready 2 Race Sale and will be selling at New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready to Run Sale at Karaka this year.

“We’ve had terrific success at the Ready 2 Race and over the last two years on gross turnover we’ve topped the Sale, probably through quantity as much as anything else,” James O’Brien said. “We’ve got wonderful facilities here and this year we’ve changed our business model.

“We have strategically chosen quality horses as yearlings with the intent of selling them as 2-year-olds. We’ve deliberately selected them in the past and we’ve done well and want to expand on that.”

Connections celebrate Just Rolling’s win at Morphettville (Atkins Photography)

It’s not hard to work out why Lauriston Thoroughbreds’ James O’Brien is pretty excited about the prospects of unbeaten 3YO colt, Just Rolling.

The Tony McEvoy trained youngster made it two from two in the Irish Race Day – 1st September Handicap over 1300m at Morphettville on Saturday and appears to have a bright future. A race replay of Morphettville R1 11 Aug 18 can be seen here

Sure, Victorian-based Lauriston didn’t retain a share in Just Rolling when selling the Sebring youngster for $330,000 at the 2017 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, but the significance of the rising galloper’s progress far outweighs monetary considerations.

After all, there’s a great deal of pride involved in this too: Just Rolling’s dam, the Encosta de Lago mare, Just Our Girl, is the first live foal of the brilliant race filly/mare, Gold Edition, which the O’Brien family raced with distinction in the mid noughties. The Champion mare’s 17 wins included a Manikato and Ascot Vale – both at Group One – five Group Twos, three Group Threes, four Listed and a whole host of Group One placings.

Sadly though, Gold Edition has had a checkered career in the breeding barn, producing just the three named foals (including an unraced 2YO) in the last 10 years.

“The great thing is that Just Our Girl was – IS – a smashing type and is turning out magnificent horses herself,” O’Brien points out. “Lauriston sold Just Our Girl to Greg Eurell for $520,000 at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and she was owned by the same people who raced Pinker Pinker (2011 Cox Plate).

“Just Our Girl didn’t do too much on the track and her owners really weren’t that interested in the breeding side of things, so we were able to buy her back.

“Her first three covers have produced colts, by Sebring, Snitzel and Not A Single Doubt and they are all outstanding athletes. The Snitzel colt was sold to Sun Bloodstock for $300,000 at this year’s (Inglis) Melbourne Premier (Yearling Sale), while her Not A Single Doubt colt will go to Melbourne for the 2019 Prem. Just Our Girl is heading to Merchant Navy this spring so we’ll be obviously keen to see what she turns out with him.”

O’Brien has closely watched Just Rolling’s two runs to date and came away suitably impressed – particularly with the win at Morphettville.

“He was caught wide on debut at Gawler, but that run on Saturday was something else: it was only a small field but 100 metres from home it appeared as if he would run a long last, but then he just finished it off so well,” O’Brien enthused. “We (Lauriston) had a very good spring last year with horses we bred winning big races in successive weeks, courtesy of Legend of Condor (Victory Vein Stakes), Global Glamour (Group Two Tristarc) and Epitmum (Telstra Stakes) and hopefully a colt like Just Rolling will kick this spring off in similar fashion.”

According to Just Rolling’s trainer, a reappearance over 1500m at Morphettville in a fortnight is on the cards before a tilt at the Listed Morphettville Guineas over 1600m on 8 September.

“If he comes through both of those races we’ll then head to Melbourne where there are a number of options including the (Group Two) Bill Stutt Stakes (won by McEvoy’s Hey Doc in 2016) and (Group One) Caulfield Guineas (13 October),” McEvoy reveals.

“I’ve had a huge opinion of Just Rolling from day one … he was the No. 1 seed in Melbourne – the best colt in the sale by a long way. I didn’t even have an ‘order’ for him and bought him purely on spec.

“I eventually filled him but then someone dropped out at the last moment and Aquis Farm took up 25%. He’s a very good colt. I’ve got another Sebring (Vinland) who showed plenty of promise, but this horse has impressed me from the start and while I thought he would get up and going as an early 2YO, we’ve just had to be a bit patient and now he’s really beginning to show us what he’s capable of.”

Chiavari has finally broken through for her maiden success at Caulfield and in doing so landed a betting plunge. The Nick Harnett-trained mare won the Ladbrokes Multiverse Handicap after being supported from $20 into $9.50.

Ridden by Jye McNeil, Chiavari held off a late challenge from Mariquita ($18) to score a three-quarter length win with Moonlover ($9) a long head away third.

Chiavari had raced at Caulfield on 13 previous occasions, for four placings, and Harnett said the mare had been unlucky on a number of occasions against better company than she met on Saturday. “She’s run some very good races here against some good horses in stakes races, so it’s good to see her breakthrough today,” he said.

Harnett, a former champion jumps jockey, trains at Pakenham having shifted to a 20-acre property at Garfield, five minutes from the racecourse. He said it suits his training style and is much quieter than the bigger training centres of Caulfield and Cranbourne.

A $50,000 yearling purchase in Adelaide, Chiavari has amassed almost $360,000 in prize money from her six wins from 39 starts. “I wish I had a few more like her,” Harnett said of his stable star.

Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm will present six quality weanlings at Inglis’ 2018 Melbourne Great Southern Sale which commences on Sunday, June 17.

The weanlings will be located in Barn G stables 89-94 at the Oaklands complex and paraded from Thursday, June 14.

Inspections by appointment are welcome at Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm, Corinella in Victoria prior to their departure to the sales venue.

SILENTZ

On Wednesday 9th May 18 SILENTZ (4g Snitzel – Inthemix by Easy Rocking) stepped out for champion trainer Darren Weir in the last at Sandown – a benchmark 70 over 1300 metres. He was ridden cold by Brad Rawiller, last and out of the picture at the top of the home straight before he reeled out two sizzling late sectionals (10.54 and 10.91) to win by more than a length. PLATINUM ANGEL

The following Saturday at Caulfield another Darren Weir trained Lauriston bred racehorse saluted in impressive fashion. Sent out as the race favourite PLATINUM ANGEL (3f Snitzel – Rapidement by Iglesia) with apprentice Ethan Brown found herself three wide in the back half of the field. After straightening she let down nicely to win comfortably by more than a length. It was the grey filly’s third career win and took her earnings to beyond $170,000. CHIAVARI

CHIAVARI (6m Teofilo – Novagen by General Nediym) has performed admirably throughout her career for trainer Nick Harnett. Ridden among the forward group by Rhys McLeod challenges came from inside and out in the straight. But CHIAVARI was tough to outlast Strykinglee by 0.2 length. CHIAVARI’S fifth win took her career prizemoney to $280,000. Replay: Race3 Sandown 16 May 18 

CARDINET

Debutant CARDINET (2f I Am Invincible – Spy Catcher by Tobougg) travelled to Wodonga to chase the extra VOBIS and VOBIS Gold bonus money on offer in the 2yo handicap over 1200 metres. Selected by punters as the race favourite the filly, with Jack hill on board, jumped well, and racing on pace managed to pull away in the straight to win by more than two lengths. It was an impressive start to the 2yo’s career and well placed by trainer Mick Price. The prizemoney and bonuses for the race totalled $59,000. Replay: Race3 Wodonga 19 May 18 

EXPLOSIVE EVIE and GLORY BLAZE

Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm will present sixteen quality yearlings at Inglis’ 2018 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale which commences on Sunday, March 4.

The yearlings will be located in Barn G stables 59-74 at the Oaklands complex and paraded from Tuesday, February 27.

Global Glamour won the G2 Tristarc Stakes in the spring – Grant Courtney

Magic Millions pin-up girl Global Glamour showed she was ready to rumble at the rich $10 million Magic Millions race day at the Gold Coast on January 13 when cruising clear for an easy trial win at Randwick on Friday morning. A replay of the trial can be seen here

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained daughter of Star Witness was asked for an effort this morning and powered through her 1045 metre heat to win by two lengths in 1:00.80 seconds which was the fastest heat of the morning at that trip.

Global Glamour was second beaten a neck in the 2017 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas following a super successful spring three year-old season when she won both the Group I ATC Flight Stakes and MRC Thousand Guineas.

Global Glamour was a modest $65,000 Magic Millions purchase from the Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm draft for James Bester It’s All About The Girls Syndicate and has won $1.3 million for her large syndicate of women owners from right around the world.

Victorian based Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm have just two yearlings for Magic Millions, but one of them is a horse that most people will want to see.

Lot 768 is a filly by Snitzel from former superstar filly sprinter Gold Edition, the winner of 17 races and over $3million in prizemoney.

A grey daughter of Lion Hunter, Gold Edition won the first running of the Group I VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes when it was previously known as the Ascot Vale Stakes and had some memorable battles with Australian Horse of the Year Miss Andretti.

It’s a fairly safe bet that this filly will make a bit more money than Global Glamour did when she walked the Gold Coast sale ring in 2015.

Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm will present two quality fillies at the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale which commences on Wednesday 10th January 2018.

The yearlings will be stabled in boxes QA 1 and QA 2 and paraded at the Gold Coast complex from Friday 5th January.

Lauriston Farm bred Eptimum strides away to win Group 3 race on Cox Plate Day (Mike Keating-Racing Photos)

No longer just a travelling companion, Lauriston Farm graduate Eptimum is now a solid challenger to his more famous stablemate Houtzen.

After his dominant win in the Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes over 1200 metres on Cox Plate Day, he will now line up (against Houtzen) in the prestigious Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes on Derby Day.

Eptimum (Snitzel) was a $200,000 purchase by his trainer Toby Edmonds from the Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm draft at the 2016 Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

Edmonds had massive wraps for him as a young horse and, early days, believed Eptimum would be the best two-year-old in his stable.

Lauriston’s James O’Brien remembers Eptimum as a yearling well, being forward and precocious enough to take to the Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale.

Eptimum had just the one unplaced run as a two-year-old before getting on the float in early Spring to accompany Magic Millions Classic winner Houtzen to Melbourne as she prepared for the Spring Carnival including the Everest.

While down here Eptimum has flown through the grades, winning a Super VOBIS maiden at Ballarat, before a solid win in at Bendigo. He then stepped up significantly to record his third win in a row with his Group 3 triumph on Saturday.

“It is staggering that he has come from a maiden to a Group 3, and to win so dominantly,” O’Brien said.

The times he ran, his sectionals were just superb…he only ran 0.02 slower than Hey Doc in the Manikato the night before, and he wasn’t even ridden right out to the line.

“Toby brought him down for some experience, and I think they have done a terrific job. I am just so excited for our farm, and excited for the mare.”

Lauriston Thoroughbreds purchased Eptimum’s dam, Paramount, as a yearling for $200,000. She is a sister to Group 1 QTC Stradbroke Handicap winner La Montagna.

Eptimum is the third foal of Paramount, who has a Not A Single Doubt two-year-old filly purchased by Aquis/Blue Sky Bloodstock for $120,000 at the Inglis Premier Sale earlier this year. The promising filly is in training with Mick Price and is apparently showing ability.

Paramount’s yearling colt by So You Think will head to Melbourne Premier Sale in March next year, and she foaled a very nice filly by Press Statement earlier this month.

And Lauriston has plenty to be excited about this Saturday with Eptimum in the Coolmore while the Lauriston bred, Gai Waterhouse trained Global Glamour is favourite for the Group 1 Myer.

“It would be really brilliant for Lauriston Farm, having won the Ascot Vale Stakes (now the Coolmore) with Gold Edition, to now have a chance of winning it again with a horse we bred.”

Lauriston Farm will be making the journey from Corinella to the Gold Coast again in January with a small but high quality draft of two yearlings.

They include a Brazen Beau filly, out of the General Nediym mare Five Star Belle and – perhaps one of the sale’s stars – a Snitzel filly out of multiple Group 1 star filly/mare Gold Edition.
