Eptimum wins the Group 3 Red Anchor Stakes

After being unplaced at his only start at two in Brisbane, the Gold Coast-trained gelding Eptimum made the trek south to earn wins at Ballarat and Bendigo before making it three on the trot in Saturday’s Group III Telstra Phonewords (Red Anchor) Stakes at Moonee Valley.

Drawing the outside barrier, Eptimum eased across to take up the running under Ryan Maloney and he was never really challenged from that point on.

After disposing of the heavily-backed Trekking before the home turn, Eptimum came home alone. He was three lengths too good for Single Bullet who finished well without threatening with Trekking a further two and a quarter lengths back in third. (photo Grant Courtney).

“We’ve got another Houtzen here”, Maloney said.

“He’swork has been first-class and I came here with a lot of confidence.

“He flew the lids, I had to do a bit of work but he switched off beautifully in the middle stages and he was just too good.”

With his first stakes win, Eptimum advances his record to 3 wins from 4 starts with earnings of $141,050.

Winning trainer Toby Edmonds said the son of Snitzel was right up there with the best in the barn.

We’ve got four horses, including Houtzen andWhypeo, and there’s been very little between them from day one.

“He’s been a little bit behind them due to maturity, so we brought him down here to do try to do that so it’s great result.”

A $200,000 purchase by his trainer from the Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm draft at the 2016 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Eptimum is the third foal of the winning Monashee Mountain mare, Paramount, who is a sister to Group 1 QTC Stradbroke Handicap winner La Montagna.

Lauriston Thoroughbred’s purchase Paramount as a yearling for $220,000.

She has a Not A Single Doubt 2yo filly that was purchased by Aquis / Blue Sky Bloodstock for $120,000 at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

Paramount has a yearling colt by So You Think and foaled a filly by Press Statement on October 17.

Eptimum becomes the 74thstakes-winner for Snitzel who marches relentlessly on to defend his champion sire title.

Dual Group One-winning mare Global Glamour (Star Witness) made a winning return to action when lifting bravely inside the final 100 metres to take out the Tristarc Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) first up at Caulfield.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained four-year-old mare, who won both the Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) and Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) last spring, was sent off a $9.50 chance on her first start since she ran second in the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick in April.

Her freshness was evident in the early part of the race as she took a keen hold under jockey Tim Clark, who expertly guided the mare into a prominent position in behind the front-running Savanna Amour (Love Conquers All) ($17) from a tough starting berth in barrier 13. She was produced to take a narrow advantage approaching the 200 metres, and when the runner-up Cool Passion (Not A Single Doubt) ($21) drew alongside in the closing stages, she found extra to score by a shorthead, with Shillelagh (Savabeel) ($14) a further three quarters of a length behind in third.

Waterhouse was pleased to see Global Glamour gain her first success since February, and said the mare was on target for a tilt at the Myer Classic (registered as Empire Rose Stakes) (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington on 4 November. “She was a bit out of sorts months ago and she’s come right around,” Waterhouse said. “It’s hard when three-year-old fillies have to make the weight-for-age improvement but she has done that. “We brought her down to Melbourne to win the Myer Classic and she’s certainly on target.”

The victory of Global Glamour also provided Sydney-based rider Clark with his first winner at Caulfield. “It’s my first win at Caulfield so it’s a great thrill, especially on a big day like today,” Clark said. “Hopefully it helps with more opportunities over the carnival.”

Global Glamour (4 m Star Witness – Spectacula by Testa Rossa), who fetched $65,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and is raced by the It’s All About The Girls syndicate, has won five of her 12 starts for prize money earnings of $1,389,000.

She is one of four named foals out of the winning Testa Rossa (Perugino) mare Spectacula, though she is the only one of three runners to so far be successful. Her winning second dam Western Success (Success Express) produced six winners from seven foals to race and is a half-sister to the stakes placegetter Bingham (Distant Music). This is also the same family as Group Three winner Sam Sung A Song (Timber Country) and stakes winners Apollua (King Apollo) and Rocket To Glory (Shovhog).

Global Glamour is one of ten stakes winners and the most successful offspring to date for her Widden Stud-based sire Star Witness (Starcraft), who is standing for a fee of $33,000 (inc GST).

The graduates of Corinella’s Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm have been regular visitors to the winner’s stalls of late with some very talented youngsters among the victors.

Leading the charge on Saturday was the Gerald Ryan trained two-year-old Legend of Condor, a very talented two-year-old who scored on debut in the Victory Vein Plate over 1000 metres in Sydney.

Sold for $520,000 as a yearling at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale through the Lauriston draft, Legend Of Condor was bought by Sun Bloodstock.

Lauriston’s James O’Brien, pointed out that the young colt is by Not A Single Doubt and is out of the Success Express mare, Rhodamine, which means he carries the same cross as Sun Stud’s Victorian Champion First Season Sire, Squamosa.

“We still have Rhodamine in our broodmare band, and I adore the Success Express mares. Legend Of Condor is not overly tall, but he is a neat, very powerful and an exceptionally strong colt,” O’Brien said.

“He was a real professional throughout his yearling preparation and incredibly popular at the sales with the buying bench. He handled the busy complex with ease; he was such a cool dude.”

The purchaser, David O’Callaghan acting on behalf of Sun Stud, is well known as an astute judge, and was keeping a keen eye on him during the inspections.

“(O’Callagahan) couldn’t help but be impressed by the colt’s attitude and demeanour. To get the price tag he did showed how many other good judges were also interested in the ring. I was over the moon with the price we achieved,” O’Brien said.

So it came as no surprise to O’Brien to hear trainer Gerald Ryan comment on how well Legend Of Condor has handled his whole racing career to date and how professional he was during his breaking in and early days at the stables.

After winning his trial in impressive time, Legend Of Condor clocked a great time at Randwick and beat the other 1000 metre race on the day.

With an extraordinary, unflappable personality, bigger and better things are ahead of him with Ryan believing that he is a horse that can make the 2018 Golden Slipper.

There have been some other impressive Lauriston bred 3YO winners in Victoria and elsewhere in the past fortnight.

The Toby Edmonds trained Eptimum (Snitzel), was brought down as a travelling companion and trackwork-mate for the super filly Houtzen. And in his time down in Victoria, he has now raced twice for two super impressive victories at Ballarat and Bendigo.

“With a three-year-old stakes option on Cox Plate day, it would be brilliant for his dam, Paramount if he gets a run, who is a full to Stradbroke winner, La Montagna,” said O’Brien.

Meanwhile the Spcier Thoroughbreds owned grey 3YO Platinum Angel, an $180,000 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling purchase, is also in for a bright future, after impressively broke her maiden recently at Mornington, for Darren Weir.

And not to be forgotten, the three year-old Iron Lotus won first up at Alice Springs, after being touted as one of the best two-year-olds in NT last season after winning the feature Inglis Red Centre 2YO Classic.

“Over the last decade, I have only taken nine yearlings to the Magic Millions. The year before last we took five, who include the Listed placed Kardashing, Platinum Angel, Eptimum and Undoubtable Miss who won the Adelaide Magic Millions race, with the fifth unraced and now trialing well in Hong Kong,” O’Brien said.

“From the previous draft of four yearlings, we had dual Group 1 winner Global Glamour and Seductress, a two year old city winner at Caulfield.  It’s been great as everything we took to sell has been winning for their new owners.”

Sun Stud is one of Victoria’s leading stallion farms. Earlier this year they were active as vendors and buyers at Melbourne’s Inglis Premier yearling sale. One of their purchases was for $520,000 from Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm. Sun placed the colt in trainer Gearld Ryan’s care and named him LEGEND OF CONDOR (2c Not A Single Doubt x Rhodamine by Success Express).

Only a handful of 2yo races have been run in Australia this season but Gerald was confident that Legend Of Condor had shown him enough promise to commence an early racing career. Gerald opted to debut the colt at Randwick yesterday in the $100,000 Victory Vein Stakes. With Josh Par on board Legend Of Condor led all the way to win, managing to hold out the late closers Spin and Stunts. Both Gerald and Josh were full of praise for the young colt after the tenacious victory.

Darren Weir trained PLATINUM ANGEL (3f Snitzel x Rapidement by Iglesia) was an impressive winner at Mornington last Tuesday. Settling toward the back, Damien Oliver urged the grey filly through the field and she was strong to the line.

In the same draft Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds purchased EPTIMUM (3g Snitzel x Paramount by Monashee Mountain) for $200,000. Toby decided to bring Eptimum to Victoria as a travelling companion for his star filly Houtzen. The Super VOBIS bonuses on offer were an added incentive to bring the gelding South.

Eptimum won at his first Victorian start at Ballarat and made it back to back wins last Wednesday at Bendigo in a benchmark 70 for 3yos. Although still a little green, both wins showed that Eptimum may be in for a bright future. Ryan Maloney rode on both occasions.

From day one, trainer Gerald Ryan has had a big opinion of Legend Of Condor and colt has shown just why with his debut win at Randwick.

Displaying a professionalism that sets him apart from some of the other two-year-olds in the Ryan stable, Legend Of Condor ($4.80) took the lead early in Saturday’s Victory Vein Plate (1000m) and held off a challenge by the favourite Spin ($4.60) by a half neck.

A $520,000 yearling at the Melbourne Premier Sale, Legend Of Condor is raced by Sun Bloodstock who also own Condor Heroes who failed to make this year’s Golden Slipper.

But Ryan expects his younger stablemate can make the grade in 2018.

“I think he can be a Slipper horse,” Ryan said.

“He is a bomb-proof, professional little horse.

“He’s not very big and he will never be big horse but he is compact and does everything right.

“He’s been like that from the time he went to Tim Boland at Limitless Lodge for his early education.

“Tim rang me to say what a little professional he was.”

The colt’s jockey Josh Parr said Legend Of Condor still had a bit to learn but he did what he asked him to do.

“He got a bit lost but he is a good horse,” he said.

“It was the win of a good horse.”

Gerald Ryan’s two-year-old Legend Of Condor exhibited all the qualities of a top class juvenile when winning the Victory Vein Plate (1000m) at Randwick on Saturday.

Following a two-length trial win at Rosehill on October 3, Legend Of Condor ($4.80) stepped out for his debut start and didn’t put a foot wrong.

Sent to the front by jockey Josh Parr, the son of Not A Single Doubt relaxed beautifully in the lead before repelling the challenge of Peter and Paul Snowden’s Spin ($4.60 fav), which had the benefit of race experience after finishing fourth in the Listed Breeders’ Plate (1000m) a fortnight ago.

Legend Of Condor held a half neck margin over Spin on the line while Stunts ($21) finished a further 1-1/2 lengths away third.

“He’s bombproof. Right from the word go when he was bought in Melbourne he’s been a professional,” Ryan said.

“This was his first time away from Rosehill today and he’s been so easy to deal with, such a quiet horse.

“Josh (Parr) has had a rap for him for quite a while and reckons he’s the best two-year-old he’s ridden this year.”

Legend Of Condor, a $520,000 yearling at the Inglis Premier Sale in Melbourne, was one of nine Sun Bloodstock purchases last season entrusted to Ryan.

“It’s great for Sun Bloodstock, they’ve really supported me this year – they’ve put a lot of money into it so it’s good for them to have a nice horse,” Ryan said.

Ryan said a Melbourne campaign this spring would be considered for the colt but revealed he is favouring the spelling paddock, with a view to focussing on next year’s autumn carnival in Sydney.

Four two year-old trials at Rosehill on Tuesday morning produced winners for Exceed and Excel, Sebring and Mossman with the fastest heat won by a slick son of Not a Single Doubt.

Prepared by Gerald Ryan for Sun Bloodstock, Legend of Condor did everything right for Josh Parr, breaking smoothly from the gates to surge forward and take up the lead.

He controlled the trial throughout and gave a good kick down the running to skip clear and win under his own steam by two lengths clocking 53.30 seconds for the 900 metre gallop.

A $520,000 Inglis Premier purchase from the Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm draft for Sun Bloodstock, Legend of Condor is from Rhodamine, a winning Success Express (USA) mare from the family of Group I NZ Two Thousand Guineas winner Atlante.

He was the most expensive yearling by his sire sold at that sale by quite a margin.

Victorian breeding and racing operation Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm was the leading vendor at the Inglis Ready 2 Race Sale, selling 13 of their 16 two-year-olds offered yesterday for an aggregate of $999,000.

James O’Brien’s Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm averaged $76,846 with a Your Song (Fastnet Rock) colt topping the draft at $160,000 when sold to Hong Kong-based Magus Equine. Catalogued as Lot 44, the colt is the fourth foal out of stakes-placed mare White Diamonds (Jugah). The colt was bought by O’Brien for $55,000 from the Murrulla Stud draft from the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. The colt had breezed at Cranbourne in a time of 11.35 seconds and his third dam produced Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Alfa (El Moxie).

Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm also sold Lot 121, a colt by first crop stallion Zoustar (Northern Meteor) out of Jessica Rose (Keep The Faith), for $150,000 to a Hong Kong-based buyer. He was also sourced from the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale by O’Brien, who outlaid $50,000 for the colt from the Arrowfield Stud draft. The colt, who breezed in a time of 11.24 at Cranbourne, is from the family of Group One winners Linton (Galileo) and Sharvasti (Montjeu).

“The Your Song went really well at $160,000 and is going to Hong Kong, which is terrific, and the Zoustar is also going to Hong Kong,” O’Brien told ANZ Bloodstock News. O’Brien said “the facilities at Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm at Corinella enabled his staff to prepare the draft of two-year-olds for the sale in excellent order. The team at home do a great job at home which is headed up by Warren Diggles,” he said.

“This was a mixed batch, with some of them being our own and some are clients, but overall it has worked out really well. We have targeted early types who can breeze up as two-year-olds and we have the beach at home, a track on the farm and they respond really well to that.”

O’Brien, who is also the president of Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria, said the two-year-old sales in Australia were lacking a strong domestic market which was evident at yesterday’s auction. The interest in the sale from overseas has been tremendous but I think what has been lacking is the local market,” he said. “For the local market the ready to run sales have traditionally been the last opportunity to sell your horse, but we specifically target good horses for this sale. We are trying to sell good horses who do run.”

A revamped Inglis Ready 2 Race sale will take place in Melbourne today, with 134 two-year-olds by proven and exciting young stallions on offer, providing international and domestic buyers an opportunity to secure an almost readymade racehorse. The auction, the first of three Southern Hemisphere two-year-old sales to be held this spring, is being described as pivotal by vendors and buyers to the long-term future of the ready to race format in Australia.

Prominent Victorian breeding operation Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm will also present a draft of 16 two-year-olds, all of whom were secured from this year’s yearling sales to be prepared for the Ready 2 Race Sale. “This is our third time at the Inglis sales, but we do separate our breeding activities with our ready to race operation,” Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm’s James O’Brien told ANZ Bloodstock News. “While our breeding is going crazy at the moment. We have found the ready to run two-year-old business fits in well with our business and the facilities we have.”

Early in the sale, Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm will offer a colt by former Patinack Farm shuttle stallion Lope De Vega (Shamardal), the sire of Sunday’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Santa Ana Lane. Catalogued as Lot 3, the colt is a half-brother to Group Three winner and Chelmsford Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) runner-up Red Excitement (Excites). The colt ran 11.54 seconds in his breeze up at Cranbourne on a Soft 7 track. “Lope De Vega is on fire as he is also the sire of (The Everest contender) Vega Magic,” O’Brien said. “This horse is a half-brother to Red Excitement who almost defeated Winx.”

O’Brien also offers a colt from the first crop of Group One winner Zoustar (Northern Meteor), who is catalogued as Lot 121. The colt is a son of Keep The Faith (Sunday Silence) mare Jessica Rose, a juvenile city winner. The colt breezed up in 11.24 seconds at Cranbourne. “The Zoustar has impressed us all the way along. Seven of our twoyear-olds who breezed up at Cranbourne ran in the top ten times on the day,” he said.

Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm also has a colt by US stallion Malibu Moon (A.P. Indy), who is catalogued as Lot 126. The Spendthrift Farmbased Malibu Moon is the sire of 103 stakes winners, 13 of whom have won at Group One level. The colt breezed up at Cranbourne in a time of 11.84 seconds. “He is an interesting horse. We purchased him the VOBIS Gold Sale and he is out of a very fast mare,” O’Brien said. “He is not a tall horse, but is very strong.”

O’Brien was optimistic of a good sale, not only for Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm, but for the majority of vendors. “I think it has been terrific with a good overseas clientele who looked at whole drafts (on Monday),” O’Brien said. “The client base has been more mixed (yesterday) and compared to last year up in Sydney, I think it has been quite strong.”

The Inglis Ready 2 Race two-year-olds have breezed up either at Canterbury racecourse in Sydney or Cranbourne, with the final opportunity for juveniles to register times held at the Victorian racecourse on Monday.

Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm will present a draft of 17 quality two-year-olds for the upcoming Inglis Ready2Race Sale at Oaklands, Melbourne on Wednesday 4th October.

Inspections by appointment are welcome at Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm, Corinella prior to their departure to the sales complex.
