WALTONIA (3f Bel Esprit x Docalady by Stravinsky) headed to Benalla on the back of a strong first up win at Warrnambool a fortnight earlier against 3 year old fillies. She had to step up out of maiden class for the first time and take on the open age horses in this race at Benalla. Daniel Stackhouse was keen to stick with her and he made the trip up the Hume Highway to take the ride.

Despite an early speed battle upfront, Daniel was able to get Waltonia to settle outside the leader after crossing from the outside barrier. Waltonia travelled strongly throughout and when they straightened up she looked like the winner. When Daniel asked her to extend she quickly raced to the front and she maintained her speed to the line to score her second win in a row.

Waltonia has certainly taken significant steps forward this preparation after spelling and being pre-trained at the O’Brien family owned, Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm in Corinella, Victoria. We were fortunate the O’Brien family sent us this Bel Esprit filly to train and we’re looking forward to racing our 2 year old So You Think colt with them in the future.

With 2 strong wins from 2 starts on the provincial circuits this preparation, we will look to give Waltonia her opportunity at metropolitan level in the coming weeks. She still looks to have improvement to come and hopefully she can continue to progress through her grades.

Speedy three-year-old filly LAKE DISTRICT GIRL (3yf Not A Single Doubt x Lake Mountain by Monashee Mountain) stepped up from a Morphettville Maiden to win at Sandown in Melbourne on Wednesday, February 20.

Despite coming from a wide gate, Lake District Girl, the $2.25 favourite, ridden by apprentice Michael Poy, had enough pace to cross and lead, then hang on score a photo-finish win in the Ladbrokes Cash In Benchmark 64 Handicap (1000m) defeating Tatiara ($5.50) with Ray’s Dream ($9.50), a long neck away third.
But the filly had to withstand a protest before being able to claim victory.

As she got tired late, Lake District Girl tended to drift towards the centre of the course and connections of the runner-up felt their runner had been impeded but stewards ruled it had not affected the result.

The victory gave McEvoy a race-to-race double at Sandown having won the previous event with Rockarral. It brought up a two-state treble having also won at Strathalbyn with Now And Forever.

Melbourne stable foreman Michael Shepherdson said Lake District Girl had shown blistering speed from the gates like during her two-year-old days.

“She is a bit more furnished now,” Shepherdson said.
“She got a bit tired late so there is more to come with her fitness.
“We’ve always thought she was a stakes-class filly but now she has gained confidence in lower grades.
“She will gain a lot from the wins and I’m sure Tony will find a nice three-year-old race for her.”

Jockey Michael Poy thought Lake District Girl had been the class horse of the race.
“The way she begun I decided to take luck out of the equation by letting her slide across to lead.
“She led easy enough and I had still had plenty left at the 300 metre mark but she got weary legs late.”

The filly now has two wins and a third from just five starts.

Talented three-year-old filly LAKE DISTRICT GIRL (3f Not A Single Doubt x Lake Mountain by Monashee Mountain) broke through for her initial win for trainer Tony McEvoy at Morphettville Parks on Wednesday, February 6 bringing up an early double for trainer McEvoy and jockey Chris Caserta, Lake District Girl ($1.40 fav) raced away for a three-length win in the AAMI Maiden (1000m) beating Nic’s Secret ($31) with Sophina Diva ($3.90), 2-1/2 lengths away third.

It was an intelligent ride by Caserta.

After beginning well, Lake District Girl looked likely to be trapped four wide but the jockey elected to ease and dropped in behind the speed finding himself on the heels of the leader turning for home. Caserta then got a run one-off the inside and the filly dashed away.

Assistant trainer Calvin McEvoy said Caserta had ridden the filly very well.

“A lot of people wanted to lead but Chris did the right thing and eased her back,” McEvoy said.
“I think we learnt a bit about the filly today.

“Chris was very cool, when you are riding a red hot favourite some may panic but he kept his cool and rode her beautifully.
“Lake District Girl came in to today on the back of one soft trial and there is improvement to come.

“The owners, including Peter Katelanis and Michael Delbridge, have been very patient. The filly has always shown potential and it was good break her maiden today.”
Caserta was very impressed.

“She went to a Blue Diamond Prelude last year but has come back matured and a lot stronger,” Caserta said.

“She has been really flying at home and I ride her work every day, so the win was a bit more special for me.”

Waltonia returned from a spell to contest the $35,000 1100m 3 year old fillies maiden at Warrnambool.

WALTONIA (3f Bel Esprit x Docalady by Stravinsky) had returned to the Romsey stables a much stronger filly after spelling and pretraining at the O’Brien family’s Lauriston Farm in Corniella. She prepared for this race with a solid jump out at Kyneton and her work had been pleasing at home. However, she had an outside barrier to contend with and she was meeting some fillies with a fitness edge on her.

Waltonia began well and quickly took the outside barrier out of the equation by crossing the field to sit outside the leader. She wanted to over race a bit in the early stages of the race, however, she eventually came back under her rider, Daniel Stackhouse, and travelled strongly into the straight. Daniel allowed her to balance up in the straight, then when he asked her to quicken, she quickly put a 3 length gap on her rivals to put the race beyond doubt. Daniel allowed Waltonia to coast over the final 50m as she went on to record a slashing 2 length victory.

The win sets up a good preparation ahead for Waltonia and she looks to have the scope to be able to progress through her grades.

The win also ensured the hot summer form of the Luke Oliver stable continued on. We have some nice horses coming through the stables at the moment and the team is working very hard to ensure the winners continue to flow in the upcoming months.

Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm bred SILENTZ (5g Snitzel x Inthemix by Easy Rocking) made it back to back city wins impressing at Flemington last Saturday in the open handicap over a mile.

Dean Yendall rode the gelding a little closer than usual, in fourth position on the rail. With 300 left in the run Dean moved Silentz into clear room where he ran down the race leader So Si Bon, to win by a length.

Silentz, who is now trained by Darren Weir, won his previous start just as impressively at Caulfield on Boxing Day.

Silentz was a $65,000 purchase from Lauriston Thoroughbred at the Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale in 2015. Silentz’s race record now stands at 7 wins (5 at city level) and $290,000 prize money from just 16 starts.

Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm will present twelve quality yearlings at Inglis’ 2019 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale which commences on Sunday, March 3.
The yearlings will be located in Barn G stables 106-117 at the Oaklands Junction, Melbourne and paraded at the complex from Tuesday, February 26.

Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm will present five quality yearlings at Inglis’ 2019 Sydney Classic Yearling Sale which commences on Saturday, February 9.
The yearlings will be located in Barn I stables 57-61 at the Riverside Stables, Sydney and paraded at the complex from Monday, February 4.

Lot number 334 at the 2015 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale was a head-turning chestnut colt by Snitzel from Inthemix (by Easy Rocking). While attracting a lot of attention, the yearling was crossed off short lists due to veterinary advise after their interpretation of the xrays lodged at the repository.

The colt was sold to trainer Danny O’Brien for $65,000.

The Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm bred colt was named Silentz and debuted as a 3yo where he was beaten in a photo. He won his following start by over a length and had just one more start for O’Brien before being transferred to Darren Weir’s stable.

Silentz had an impressive first preparation in his new stable which consisting of eight starts from March through to July 2018. He won four of those starts, including a streak of three in a row, and an impressive victory at Flemington over a mile. Yesterday Silentz was equally as impressive highlighted by his trademark fast-finishing turn of foot. LEGEND OF CONDOR (3c Not A Single Doubt x Rhodamine by Success Express) is quietly growing a reputation as a big day performer. He won on debut as a young 2yo at Randwick on the inaugural Everest Race Day, and his latest victory on Melbourne Cup Day.

Legend Of Condor had displayed a tendency to over race in previous starts, but down the Flemington straight, in Brett Prebble’s care, the colt did settle. Prebble guided the Gerald Ryan trained entire inside the field in the centre of the track before letting him down in the closing stages. Prior to the race there were doubts about Legend Of Condor’s ability to handle a wet track. Melbourne had experienced heavy rain on the morning of Cup Day, but as a testament to the Flemington track it was upgraded after Legend Of Condor’s race.

The 3yo Colt has placed at Group 2, Group 3 and Listed level and has amassed $278,000 from his 10 starts for his owners Sun Bloodstock. Sun purchased the Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm bred colt from the 2017 Melbourne Inglis Premier Sale for $520,000.

His dam, Rhodamine is again in foal to Not A Single Doubt and Lauriston thoroughbred Farm is looking forward to her producing a full sibling to Legend Of Condor.

Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm will present a draft of ten quality two-year-olds for the upcoming Inglis Ready2Race Sale at Riverside, Warwick Farm, NSW on Monday 15 October. The horses will be paraded at the complex from Friday 12 October.
