Mornington trainer Jason Warren has a likely candidate for next year’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic after pin-pointing a racy Snitzel filly from Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm at the Gold Coast on Thursday.

“She was value considering what some of the other Snitzels are selling for this week,” Warren said. “It’s been hard to get a good one at the right price so we’re very happy to send her home for $170,000.”

The Snitzel – Five Star Belle filly is the first foal of a half-sister to G1 QTC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Aragen and Perth stakes winner Cavallo Pazzo. “She’s a stunning filly and looks a two year-old type,” Warren added. “There’s been plenty of hype around the first season sires but I will take her any day.”

Warren’s partner Belinda Palmer will syndicate the filly among a group of ladies so she’s eligible for an extra bonus next year.

Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm returned to the Gold Coast for the first time in several years. “We were lucky enough to buy Gold Edition here and she won the Magic Millions 3YO Trophy,” Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm’s operations manager James O’Brien said. “The atmosphere is terrific and all our yearlings have been nominated for Super VOBIS.”

The Corinella based farm also sold two colts to Danny O’Brien on Thursday and Friday. The first was another Snitzel from Inthemix (Easy Rocking) for $65,000 and the second was a Sebring out of Rhodamine (Success Express) that made $125,000.

The final Lauriston lot was a Star Witness – Spectacula filly purchased for $65,000 by James Bester on behalf of the “It’s All About The Girls” syndicate.

Timely Truce completed a winning week for the O’Brien family at Cranbourne on Friday night. The Brief Truce gelding was racing first-up after almost a year on the sidelines and he benefited from a perfect ride by Jye McNeil.

Timely Return

It had been 48 weeks since Timely Truce (5g. Brief Truce – Gal Express by Success Express) had stepped out at a race day. Last Friday at Cranbourne Timely Truce returned to Cranbourne in a $25,000 benchmark 70 rated race over 1,000 metres. It was the last race of the experimental rapid racing day with races spaced just twenty minutes apart and jockeys unable to compete in consecutive races.

Jye McNeil had been chosen by Ricky Maund to ride. Jye positioned Timely Truce into fourth position one out from the rail. The two leaders set a fast tempo but at the turn Timely Truce moved out to press for the lead. He won by just over two lengths.

Ricky Maund lauded the efforts of his team for Timely Truce’s impressive return to the racetrack.

Stimulatte’s win secured Gordon Richards a $10,000 South Australian trainers’ bonus for training four winners in a month.

The Lauriston Thoroughbred farm bred gelding was purchased by Gordon Richards for $7,000 at Adelaide’s Magic Million’s yearling sale. He has now won more than $130,000.

Magic Millions 2015 Gold Coast Yearling Sale Draft

For the first time for some years, Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm will be presenting a draft of four yearlings, two colts and two fillies, at the up-coming Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale.

The draft will be available for inspection from Friday 2nd January and stabled in Barn QA.

Snitzel x Five Star Belle_18-12-2014_GEN_Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm__623Lot 247 is a chestnut filly bred on the same cross as Group1 winner Sizzling. She is by Snitzel from the General Nediym mare, Five Star Belle. The dam won 4 races from 1400m to 1800m and we all know of the exploits of the sire. Ever since she took her first steps this filly has exuded a presence and precocity. During the whole sale preparation period she impressed our yearling manager, Warren Diggles who commented that she has great attitude and is a delight to handle.

Snitzel x Inthemix_18-12-2014_GEN_Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm__1060Lot 334   is a magnificent chestnut colt by Snitzel from the Easy Rocking mare, Inthemix  – a full sister to the million dollar stakes winner Pepperwood. This colt is strong, well conformed and well balanced. He has handled the sale preparation with aplomb and that attitude will undoubtedly transcend into his race ability. Make sure you inspect this youngster because he will impress!

Sebring x Rhodamine_18-12-2014_GEN_Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm__981Lot 567 is a bay colt from a family that has nicked well with More Than Ready. This colt is by More Than Ready’s son Sebring from the Success Express mare Rhodamine, a winner of eight races.  He is a great walker and already displays the physique of a natural athlete. There will be very few better types than this son of Sebring at these sales.

Star Witness x Spectacula_18-12-2014_GEN_Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm__755Lot 633   is a bay or brown filly by Star Witness from the city winning Testa Rossa mare Spectacula. She ticks all the boxes: including size, conformation, length of rein, posture and alertness. Lot 633 represents a wonderful opportunity to purchase a quality filly which will provide the buyer(s) with great enjoyment. Don’t miss her. She’s well worth a close inspection.

The four horses listed above are all Super VOBIS nominated and BOBS eligible.

Gauteng Gal Shows a Turn of Foot

Lot 698,Turffontein x Gal Express_05-02-2013_GEN_Lauriston__2064Among Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm’s draft at the 2013 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale was Lot 698 – a chestnut filly by Turffontein (pictured above as a yearling). The filly was sold to WA trainer John Price for $20,000. John relocated to Victoria and named the filly Gauteng Gal
(3f. Turffontein – Gal Express by Success Express)

She stepped out on debut at Stony Creek earlier this month. However, she could not muster early speed and found herself toward the tail of the field. She was wide at the turn but after straightening she really hit the line well to dead heat for third just 0.3 lengths behind the winner.

Her second start was for three year old maiden fillies over 1,100 metres at Bendigo today. The field included some highly fancied and expensive first starters.

WA raider Chris Parnham picked up the ride. Earlier he had steered home Wez Hunter’s Parcel to an impressive victory. Gauteng Gal began from the wide gate. Perhaps having learned from her previous race start Gauteng Gal was fast away and wide but able to maintain some early speed. From the wide spot Chris eased her into a gap and positioned her masterfully closest to the fence and just behind the leading bunch. From there Chris tracked race favourite Lady Einstsein into the straight before asking Gauteng Gal to show the turn of foot that she had displayed on debut. Gauteng Gal won by a length.

The win made it two wins from both Victorian rides for Chris Parnham.

Hat Trick For Stimulatte

DSC0575 Excites x Caffe FrancaisGordon Richards elected to run Stimulatte (4g Excites – Caffe Francais by Latarmiss) at Morphettville yesterday. The gelding (pictured as a yearling) had won just a week earlier and impressed punters enough to send him him out as the $1.50 favourite. From the wide gate Josh Cartwright confidently took Stimulatte to the front. Frost Dodger gave chase and although game to the end was never really a threat to Stimulatte who won over the 1,950 metre journey by 2.5 lengths. The win gave trainer and jockey a double following Nordic Eclipse’s victory in the first and made it three wins in a row for Stimulatte.

Gordon Richards purchased the Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm bred gelding at the Magic Million’s Adelaide sale in 2012 for $7,000. The win was Stimulatte’s fifth and takes his career earnings to $113,800.

Lot 141,Bel Esprit x Pride Of Encosta_12-02-2012_GEN_Lauriston Thoroughbreds__305Later at Cranbourne’s Saturday night meeting Fairy House (4f Bel Esprit – Pride of Encosta by Encosta de Lago) pictured as a yearling also sported the LTF brand into the winning stall. Jinx stole a big break on the field but under pressure she began to tire and Noel Callow aboard Fairy House was able to reel her in during the latter stages and draw away to win by a length and a half.

It was the second career win for the John Moloney trained 4yo. The mare was purchased from Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm for $80,000 by Steve Brem for her owners from the 2012 Inglis Melbourne Premier yearling sale.

Gordon Richards hoping Stimulatte can keep his good form up at Morphettville Parks

Trainer Gorden Richards

Trainer Gordon Richards

Gordon Richards has been shocked at how easily Stimulatte has won his past two races and he hopes he will complete a hat-trick at Morphettville Parks this afternoon.

Stimulatte has been dominant in his past two starts, winning by a combined margin of 8.7 lengths and is on the quick back-up.

The Morphettville trainer insists there is no magic trick, just a combination of factors coming together at the right time.

“It’s a bit of everything – getting up to the right distance, having him fit enough and Josh (Cartwright) riding him accordingly,” Richards said. “He’s taken a while to strike his form so we’ll try to pick them up when we can.”

Richards says the four-year-old doesn’t want much further than 2000m and is looking towards a race like next month’s Strathalbyn Cup as his main goal.

But he’s continuing to work through the grades and this is his toughest test to date.

Cartwright, who has been on board for both of Stimulatte’s wins, takes the ride again and will be positive from barrier 10.

“Both races probably weren’t that strong, but he didn’t just win, he won them easily,” Richards said. “This is a lot stronger but he could possibly do the same thing.

“He’s done well since his last run, he’s drawn poorly, but he’ll go forward and it shouldn’t worry him too much.”

Bookmakers agree, with TattsBet installing Stimulatte as a $1.80 favourite, with Frost Dodger ($3.40) and Langridge Street ($7) the only other runners under double figures.

It’s a big day for Richards, who will saddle up five runners.

Outside of Stimulatte, he gives promising three-year-old Black Caesar the best chance.

“He’s a horse that’s learning all the time,” he said. “His third behind Lord Aspen was pretty good and I think he’s a horse with a bit of a future. I expect him to go really well.”

Stimulatte Impresses at Morphettville

Lot 138,Excites x Caffe Francais_12-02-2012_GEN_Lauriston Thoroughbreds__959 Stimulatte (4g Excites – Cafe Francais by Latarmiss), pictured as a yearling, made it back to back wins at Morphettville last Saturday when he stepped out beyond 2,000 metres for the first time in his career. Josh Cartwright allowed the Gordon Richards trained gelding to settle behind the pace maker Go Girlfriend who crossed from the wide gate and set a strong tempo. Stimulatte drew level after the turn and ran away to win easily by almost 5 lengths. It was the fourth win for the 4yo who won on debut as a 2yo.

Gordon Richards purchased the Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm bred gelding as a colt from Lauriston’s draft at the Magic Million’s Adelaide sale in 2012 for $7,000. Stimulatte has now won $94,000 and appears to be in top form.

Lot 552,Reset x Gal Express_12-02-2012_GEN_Lauriston Thoroughbreds__923Stimulatte was not the only 4yo bred by Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm to salute last week. Gallant Express (4g Reset – Gal Express by Success Express), pictured as a yearling claimed his second career victory at Moe on the day prior.

Jockey Patrick Keane had originally served his apprenticeship with trainer Doug Harrison and had ridden Gallant Express on occasion at track work. During his career Gallant Express had frustrated his trainer and jockeys with his tendency to over race. And so Doug chose to drop him back in distance in an attempt to teach him to settle. In both of his rides on the gelding Patrick took an early hold and on both occasions Gallant Express settled after jumping. He finished both races well. He was runner up at Moe on the 25th of November and went one better last Friday hitting the line just when it mattered.

StimulatteStimulatte (4g Excites – Cafe Francais by Latarmiss) pictured above courtesy of Greg Irvine, Blue Diamond (4g Tale Of The Cat – Mighty Atalanta by Mighty Avalanche), and Cosmic Kheleyf (4g Kheleyf – Cosmic Express by Success Express) were all convincing winners this week. The three were all included among Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm’s draft at Magic Million’s Adelaide yearling sale in 2012.

Blue Diamond was offered as lot 9 at the sale. He was purchased by Ascot Racing for $50,000. Gordon Richards picked up lot 138 – Stimulatte for $7,000 and Scott Trenowden purchased Cosmic Kheleyf, lot 345, from the second session of the sale for $27,000.

Lot 345,Kheleyf x Cosmic Express_12-02-2012_GEN_Lauriston Thoroughbreds__187Cosmic Kheleyf, pictured as a yearling, stepped out in class 1 company at Gawler last Wednesday over 1,111 metres. From the wide gate Shayne Cahill was content to position the Scott Trenowden trained gelding toward the rear. Shayne moved into the race at the turn and had the leaders covered after straightening. He won by just over two lengths.

Lot 9,Tale Of The Cat x Mighty Atlanta_12-02-2012_GEN_Lauriston Thoroughbreds__97Punters did not miss Blue Diamond’s (pictued as a yearling) impressive win at Singapore just two weeks ago for trainer Alwin Tan. Accordingly Blue Diamond was sent out as the odds-on favourite in the third over 1,100 metres on Singapore’s polytrack last Friday. He did not disappoint. Regular rider Danny Beasley was on board and they settled third outside the two race leaders. Entering the straight Blue Diamond drew level and then away from runner up Royal Style to win by more than a length.

After placing at his previous two starts Gordon Richards stepped Stimulatte out to 1,800 metres at Morphettville yesterday. In form Victorian apprentice Josh Cartwright took the ride. After jumping well Josh elected to settle Stimulatte outside the leading pair. Race favourite Spun Dry dropped out of the early speed battle to box seat leaving Stimulatte positioned just outside front runner Go Girlfriend. After the turn Stimulatte broke away from the field and went on to win by four lengths. The win was Josh’s second of four for the day.

Polinelli Makes it Three in a Row

PolinelliDamien Thornton allowed Polinelli (4g Hard Spun – Inthemix), pictured as a yearling, to settle at the rear of the eleven horse field in the fifth at Werribee over a mile last Thursday. Damien was patient to the turn. Then, threading a passage between horses steadily made ground on the lead group. Polinelli pounced on the leader in the closing stages to win by half a length.
