Lauriston’s First New Zealand Winner

Colonel Greer, trained by Richard Collett, won in only his second start yesterday at Ruakaka, New Zealand. The race, for 2yos, was over 1200 metres.

Colonel Greer was ridden off the speed by Alysha Collett who took the gelding to the outside at the turn. Making up ground quickly, Colonel Greer looked the likely winner but started to race greenly. On pacer and race favourite Perfect Katch kicked back along the inside. Colonel Greer managed to hold her out to win by a nose. More than four lengths away Weiro finished third.

Colonel Greer is the thirty-ninth individual winner bred at Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm and the second winner from Lauriston mare Orpenella.  He is a son of Jungle Pocket who stood at Hollylodge Thoroughbred Stud in Avenel, Victoria. He was offered for sale among Eliza Park’s 2009 yearling sales draft at Karaka, NZ. The yearling was purchased by Collett Racing Stables for NZ$45,000.

Colonel Greer is the second Lauriston bred horse to win this week, following Al Jandar’s impressive display at Sale last Thursday.
