Lauriston successfully selling on two fronts

Article from TDN written by Paul Vettise

Lot 61 Headwater x Final Star

Two clearly defined and independently successful businesses are neatly combined under the Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm banner, whose Victorian operation has become renowned for selling high quality stock.

The breeding operation is home fuelled by a band of resident broodmares with Lauriston taking a don’t hold anything back approach while its ready to run business is based on strict selection criteria that has earned a strong sale ring following.

Lauriston will be presenting a draft of 12 at the Inglis Ready2Race Sale on October 22 and among them is Lot 20, a Better Than Ready colt who posted the quickest breeze-up time during the recent Cranbourne session.

“We primarily breed and sell yearlings and the way it all started for us was when Dad (Kevin) sold his business and bought a farm in 2000 and bought a few horses and had amazing success,” James O’Brien said.

“Street Smart won the Light Fingers and came third in the Doomben 10,000, Pure Energy was runner-up in the Golden Slipper and won the Reisling in the lead-up and Ice Chariot won the Queensland Derby while Goldie was doing her thing at the same time.”

Golden times
Gold Edition (Lion Hunter), affectionately known as Goldie by the family, won 17 of her 37 starts including the G1 Ascot Vale S. and the G1 Manikato S., posted five wins at Group 2 level and was a multiple top-flight placegetter.

Gold Edition

“You become hooked so we transformed our business and breeding quickly became our passion and we quickly learned to sell everything,” O’Brien said. “If you don’t, it’s very difficult to sell horses if you’re going to keep all the good ones.

“We’ve had some pretty good success and I guess the highlight has been breeding Global Glamour, who won two Group 1s in seven days with Gai Waterhouse.”

Global Glamour

Global Glamour’s dam Spectacula still resides at Lauriston

Global Glamour’s dam Spectacula (Testa Rossa) still resides at Lauriston and is empty this year and has been booked to visit The Autumn Sun.

“Goldie’s still here as well and just gave us a positive to Lonhro, which is nice and she’s very much loved,” O’Brien said.

“We’ve separated our businesses and have a breeding farm, which is massively busy foaling down and taking mares away to the studs and the other side where we do the yearlings preps is a little bit quieter.

“We ramped that up by doing the ready to runs and something that we’ve been focussing on for the last four or five years. We’ve had some terrific success and I deliberately keep the two businesses separate.

“We strongly try not to sell our homebred horses into the 2-year-old market and the reason is we try to sell all of our foals.

“With the ready to runs, we specifically buy horses to suit that market. While we breed ourselves, we pinhook into the ready to run market and we’ve had some terrific success.”

They include the Hong Kong-based Jumbo Prize (Your Song), a winner for Caspar Fownes who was sold for $160,000 in 2017 while the previous year Battle Storm (Statue Of Liberty {USA}) made $100,000. The Adam Durrant-trained gelding has won five of his six starts for owner Bob Peters.

The Gai Watehouse and Adrian Bott-trained winner Ausfighter (Fighting Sun) is another Lauriston graduate, who was sold for $50,000, also at the 2017 auction.

“We had a really good sale last year as well and sold a Not A Single Doubt for $210,000 and a nice Rubick colt for $175,000,” O’Brien said.

“We’re looking forward to selling 12 colts this year. We look for nice types with hopefully with a nice pedigree. We do all the due diligence with x-rays and scoping.”

The Better Than Ready who breezed over 200 metres in the quickest time of 10.37s at Cranbourne was a $61,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale buy and is out of a half-sister to the stakes winner Zebulon (All American).

Lot 20 – Better Than Ready x Blessed Anna (colt)

“We’ve got a Nicconi, Lot 31, who has always looked a fast horse and he breezed up well and Lot 61 by Headwater has always impressed us. He’s a nice, strong type,” O’Brien said.

The Nicconi was a $40,000 buy at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and his dam Casino Bride (Casino Prince) won five races and is from a well-performed North American family. The Headwater colt was purchased for $15,000 at the Inglis Classic Sale and his mother Final Star (Delago Brom) is a half-sister to the dam of Group 3 winners Red Colossus (Testa Rossa) and Nediym’s Glow (General Nediym).

Lot 53 – Headwater x Dreamlike (colt)

Another son of Headwater, Lot 53, is highly-regarded and was secured at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale for $30,000. He is from the family of Holy Roman Emperor (Ire), who also has two sons, Lots 75 and 139, in the Lauriston draft.

“We’re really, really happy with the I Am Invincible as well,” O’Brien said. “He’s Lot 60 and a half-brother to a 2-year-old winner with Gai Waterhouse called Minted.”

Classic buy
A $120,000 Classic purchase, the son of I Am Invincible is out of the stakes performed Encosta de Lago mare Fashion.

O’Brien also has high hopes for Lot 116, a Rich Enuff colt from Non Stop Rock (Fastnet Rock), the family of black type winner Absolute Flirt (Stratum), who was bought out of the Magic Millions Capricornia Yearling Sale for $14,000.

Lot 60 – I Am Invincible x Fashion (colt)

Not A Single Doubt is also represented by Lot 160, a son of Shoptalk (Flying Spur) from the family of dual Group 1 winner Ace High (High Chaparral {Ire}) bought for $80,000 at the Classic Sale.

“Some of them will go early and some of ours will be 3-year-olds. The team does a great job and they’re all good types specifically bought for this,” O’Brien said.” There’s only one judge though, and that’s the winning post.”

Lauriston’s Glamour stars at Magic Millions

Story by Brad Bishop, Racing.com
James O’Brien hasn’t had any first-hand involvement with Global Glamour for more than four years, but there was no prouder man when she stole the show during Wednesday’s session at the Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

The five-year-old product of Star Witness and Spectacula, who was bred at the O’Brien family’s Lauriston Farm in Victoria, became the first seven-figure lot of Day 2 when sold for $1,550,000.
She was purchased by a partnership involving Coolmore’s Tom Magnier, James Bester – who brought together the syndicate of women that raced Global Glamour – and Gerry Harvey.

“There’s no possible way that I thought she would make that mark when she was born,” O’Brien said of Global Glamour, who O’Brien sold for $65,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. “Just seeing her racing career evolve, we’ve just been so proud to see that result. She is the best filly that we’ve produced. She did an amazing job on the racetrack.”

Global Glamour, who was prepared for this week’s sale by Widden Stud, lived up to her billing as the banner lot of the second day of selling with her opening bid of $1 million ensuring she’d set a new mark for the highest-priced lot of Day 2.

Magnier was happy to get the mare who is in-foal to Zoustar, but will be covered by high-profile Coolmore recruit Justify this coming breeding season.
“She’s a lot of quality, she was obviously an amazing race filly,” Magnier said.“All the best judges were on her, so we’re just happy that we got her. We’ll send her to Justify, that’s where Gerry wants to go.”

The last of Global Glamour’s 19 starts was last September in the Group 3 How Now Stakes at Caulfield, the venue of her second Group 1 in eight days during the spring of 2016.
After winning the Flight Stakes at Randwick, the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained filly headed south to win the Thousand Guineas.

That race has had a profound impact on this week’s sale. Runner-up I Am Star was offered for sale on Day 1 but passed in for $1.4 million, while third placegetter Whispering Brook sold for $1.1m on Tuesday.Missrock, the seventh placegetter, holds top billing as the highest-priced lot of the sale at the halfway mark after changing hands for $2.3m on Day 1.Fromparis Withlove, who finished second-last in the Guineas, was also sold on Day 2, changing hands for $320,000.

Lauriston Bred Double

test try

Won’t Think Twice as a yearling

Two Lauriston bred horses were first to greet the judge on Thursday 18 April 2019.

It was her third career start and the first in blinkers for WON’T THINK TWICE 3f (So You Think – Show Stealer by Tobougg) at Benalla in a maiden over a mile yesterday. The 3yo was slow from the gates to land a length behind the rest of the field. The race was run at a slow tempo and apprentice Georgina Cartwright kept her in touch. Won’t Think Twice moved to the outside at the turn but, in what appeared to be a race winning move, Jack Hill was off and running on Dixie Built. Won’t Think Twice showed an impressive turn of foot to run down the front runner to win by a length.

“She’s still new” said Cartwright after the race “and she will improve, the further she gets in trip”.

When she was at the top of the straight Cartwright explained “I’ve got a fair amount of ground to make up … but she really wanted it. Once I was a hundred out I thought I’m a chance of winning this. She fought to the line really well”.

A race replay can be seen here: Race 2 Benalla 18 Apr 2019

Won’t Think Twice was a $100,000 purchase at Inglis’ Premier Yearling Sale by Sam Pritchard-Gordon from Lauriston’s 2017 draft.

Undoubtable Miss winning the 2017 Adelaide Magic Millions 2yo Classic

UNDOUBTABLE MISS (4m Not A Single Doubt – Spy Catcher by Tobougg) was the other Lauriston bred winner for the day. The Adelaide Magic Millions winner was sent out at 10-1 odds in the 1200 metre race at Pakenham.

From the inside gate Luke Currie kept the mare on the inside and found the lead midway down the long straight. Undoubtable Miss held off the late finishing race favourite Sunrise Dancer by a length. A race replay can be seen here: Race 7 Pakenham 18 Apr 2019

2017 filly by Bel Esprit x Spy Catcher

Undoubtable Miss was a $90,000 purchase by Robbie Griffiths at the 2016 Magic Millions Yearling Sale. The win was her third and took her career prizemoney to more than $240,000.

Robbie Griffiths purchased a Bel Esprit yearling half sister by to Undoubtable Miss at Inglis’ Premier Yearling Sale earlier this year.

Girl arrives in time

Article sourced from: www.mcevoymitchellracing.com.au

South African jockey Barend Vorster produced another magical ride to land LAKE DISTRICT GIRL (3f. Not A Single Doubt x Lake Mountain by Monashee Mountain) a photo-finish win at Morphettville on Saturday, March 30.
The Tony McEvoy-trained three-year-old filly looked to be in a lot of trouble when she was caught in behind runners down the home straight, but Vorster threaded the eye of a needle to burst between runners and come to score a last-stride win.

Lake District Girl ($4) arrived to score a head win in the Kilburn Football Club Handicap (1050m) beating Viduka ($4.40) with Heaven’s Deal ($5.50) a long neck away third.

The victory gave McEvoy a two-state double as he won earlier in the day at Bendigo with Secret Blaze.

McEvoy’s South Australian stable foreman John Cornell said the plan had to be to ride Lake District Girl with a sit.
“We’ve always been keen to get a bit of cover with her,” Cornell said.
“The other day in Melbourne she was exposed, no fault of the jockey. Today, with a bit of cover she showed she can finish her races off.
“Still learning about racing and can do things wrong but we have a huge opinion of her and she is starting to show it.”

Winning jockey Barend Vorster was suitably impressed.
“She’s a nice filly, but a little on the hot side,” Vorster said.
“We had to try a few different tactics today, to get her to settle behind some other runners.
“She began well and settled nicely, and in the home straight it was a case of finding the right run.
“I took the inside run and she got there at the right time.
“She had the momentum and the horses in front of me were pulling me along. It was just a matter of time for the others dropping off to allow me to get a run through and accelerate at the right time.”

No Doubting her Courage!

Article from Griffiths Racing: Mar 12, 2019

What a deserved breakthrough it was for UNDOUBTABLE MISS (4m Not  A Single Doubt x Spy Catcher by Toubougg) at Pakenham on Thursday evening, the tough mare having been so game in the placings at her two previous outings – on each occasion having a good blow afterwards.

“After every run this time in she has come back heaving,” said a delighted Jade Matthews who was so happy to see the four-year-old record her first victory since her success in the 2017 Adelaide Magic Millions.”She has had a lot of problems since that win and this time in it has taken a bit of time to get the weight off her. But we thought she was definitely fit enough tonight at her fourth run in.”

Matthews did admit to being a little concerned late however as Undoubtable Miss had to dig deep having made her run early – “I was worried she was going to blow out at the end there but she just kept on going.”

Superbly ridden by Luke Currie, Undoubtable Miss sat third initially, edging closer to get to second around the back of the course – joining the leader before the turn and engaging in a three horse war from the 300m. She and Riel Reward quickly shook off the other contender and it was always Undoubtable Miss who was going to get the upperhand – the others chasing in vain as she dug deep.

“She did a good job,” Currie reported. “I was going to tuck into the one/one early but they were not going overly hard so I let her keep creeping forward. She did a good job to hold them off as we did get to the lead a long way out. She still had a bit of a blow pulling up so she will be better again for that.”

A race replay can be seen here: 16 Mar 19 Pakenham R5

A graduate of the 2016 Gold Coast Magic Millions, Undoubtable Miss is as her name suggests a daughter of the successful stallion Not A Single Doubt.

Bred by Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm, she is out of the winning Tobougg mare Spy Catcher, a granddaughter of the Surround Stakes and Sweet Embrace Stakes winner Khaptivaan. Served last sping by Merchant Navy having produced a full brother to Undoubtable Miss in late August, Spy Catcher can also boast amongst her relations the Gr.1 sprinter Khaptingly (Oakleigh Plate) and the stakes winners Khaptrist, Sain Khapital, Spanish Bay, Stimulus and Battlefield.

Hoofnote: Robbie purchased a Bel Esprit yearling half sister to Undoubtable Miss at Inglis’ Premier Sale last week from Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm. The filly’s pedigree can be viewed here: Lot 762
