Morphettville based trainer Richard Jolly purchased Lot 152, a chestnut colt (pictured as a yearling) by Bianconi from Tendue, at Adelaide’s 2010 Magic Millions yearling sale from Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm for $25,000. The yearling was syndicated among a large group of owners and was named Alcohol.
Without winning Alcohol showed enough early promise for Jolly to send him to Victoria to tackle a $100,000 race at Moonee Valley. Alcohol won the mile race by half a length. He was ineligible for the $100,000 extra bonus offered by Inglis on the race, however he was qualified for Super VOBIS and that entitled to a share of the $30,000 Super VOBIS bonus.
During his next preparation, Alcohol was runner up at Group 3 level in the Chairman’s Stakes over 2,000 metres at Morphettville and performed admirably in the SA Derby. He won twice at Morphettville during his next preparation before embarking again on an interstate raid into Victoria for another $100,000 race. This time the venue was Flemington and the journey 2,000 metres. He won by a length and a half.
Last Saturday with Jake Toeroek on board Alcohol returned to racing after an injury enforced lay off. He was sent out at long odds over the 1,200 metre Morphettville journey, but the punters had it wrong. Grinding late Alcohol fell in to record his fifth victory and increased his career prizemoney to more than $240,000.
Jolly also purchased a full brother to Alcohol (pictured as a yearling) at Adelaide’s 2013 Magic Millions yearling sale from Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm for $36,000. This yearling was named Alcobro and Alcobro shares many of the same owners as his older brother.
Yesterday Alcobro had his first race start at Halidon over 1,000 metres. And just like Alcohol Jake Toeroek wearing Jolly’s blue silks with a pink fleur-de-lys, yellow sleeves and a blue cap was up. Alcobro over raced outside the leader but was strong when it mattered and ran away in the latter stages to win by more than three lengths. Alcobro has a long way to go to match the feats of his older brother – but it was certainly an inspiring start.
Four year old gelding Two Way Street (Street Cry x Street Smart – pictured as a yearling) was the third horse to carry the LTF brand into the winners stall for the weekend. Impressively, in just his third race start, he won the first at Deagon by more than six lengths.
