Lauriston’s Easter Wrap

The Inglis Sydney Easter Yearling Sale concluded on Thursday with five yearlings comprising of Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm’s supplementary additions. The yearlings had previously been withdrawn from Inglis’ Melbourne’s Premier yearling sale due to a quarantine issue that was subsequently averted.

Combined with yearlings already entered into the main session at Easter, Lauriston’s final draft at Inglis’ Easter Yearling Sale totaled seven yearlings.

Barnato Impresses on Debut

BarnatoSingapore’s first 2yo race for the season was held at Kranji yesterday. The 1000m race was the first leg of a six race 2yo series culminating in the Group2 Aushorse Golden Horseshoe.

Among the ten horse field was Barnato – a son of Redoute’s Choice and a three quarter brother to Australia’s top rated 3yo sprinter and top rated 3yo filly for 2006-07 – Gold Edition. Barnato was purchased by Derek Brugman for Markus Jooste’s Nordic Racing & Breeding from Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm’s draft at the 2013 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.

Barnato jumped well and jockey Vagner Leal positioned him just outside the two race leaders. The debutant was a little erratic in the straight but was strong in the final stages to win by three quarters of a length.

Replay: Singapore Race 5 23/04/14

“When you ride a good horse like this, it’s very easy. There’s a lot of speed in this horse and he has a lot of potential,” said Leal after the race.

Barnato, owned by the Saffa Stable, is trained by Patrick Shaw. “I felt the 1000m would be a bit sharp for him. He doesn’t look like a 1000m horse and we will send him out further.”

Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm will be offering Lot 28 at Inglis’ Easter sale. The grey colt by Street Cry is from Barnato’s three quarter sister Gold Edition.

ALL SYSTEMS GO! – GREAT NEWS

LTFLauriston Thoroughbred Farm is pleased to announce that our full draft of eight yearlings will be presented for sale at the Adelaide Magic Millions Sale commencing Monday 10 March. The yearlings will be available for inspection at the Morphettville venue from Friday 07 March. And quite honestly this is collectively the best draft of yearlings that we will have ever presented in Adelaide. Right now all are “jumping out of their skins”.

We have maintained a vigilant quarantine protocol after learning that one of our 2013 foals had contracted strangles.

All our yearlings destined for sale have been monitored closely with the assistance of Flemington Equine Clinic. No yearling has displayed any clinical sign of infection. Temperatures taken twice daily have all been in the normal range.

As of yesterday all our yearlings have returned negative results to all swabs for strangles within the mandatory 14 day incubation period.

Naturally we are devastated to have withdrawn our draft from the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale but feel justified that we made the right decision in light of the potential problem that anyone of our yearlings may have presented to so many wonderful young horses.

It is our intent to offer these yearlings at public auction later this year and a decision as to which sale will be made shortly.

May I say right now that the wonderful support from the Sales companies, the messages of goodwill and generally the best wishes from so many industry friends have been of much comfort.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

LTFLauriston Thoroughbred Farm is disappointed to announce the withdrawal of its draft of yearlings from the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale commencing 2 March 2014.

Last Spring a foal returned to Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm from the Hunter Valley diagnosed with strangles.  This was the first known case of the virus on the farm.  Following due protocols the farm was deemed free of the virus in late January 2014.

Inexplicably another foal recently returned a positive to strangles.

Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm yearlings are being closely monitored by Dr Tom Brennan of Flemington Equine Clinic and no yearling has shown any clinical signs of the infection.  All had been vaccinated earlier this year.

However, as a precautionary measure, and in the best interests of the wider equine community, Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm has decided to withdraw its yearlings from this year’s Melbourne Premier Sale.

All at Lauriston, the management and staff deeply regret this outcome and we apologise unreservedly for causing any inconvenience.

As soon as the outstanding analysis provides a clearance for these yearlings they will then be offered for sale and I hope to make an announcement as to the venue of that sale in the ensuing days.

General well prepared for Oakleigh Plate battle

The military rank of General can only be achieved by producing a long, successful and distinguished career, so when Kevin and Tanith O’Brien of Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm decided to call their home-breed son of Brief Truce – General Truce, they unknowingly chose a very fitting name.

Retained by the O’Brien’s’ after the horse was not accepted for auction by the sales companies as a yearling, General Truce made a winning debut as a 2yo in a Bendigo maiden back in October 2009 and at his following start, would have had the sale companies regretting their decision even further when he took out the G3 Maribyrnong Plate.

Four seasons on, a further seven wins – three of them at stakes level, and with placings behind Black Caviar, Happy Trials, Soul and Buffering on his record, the rising 7yo is still performing at the top level and commenced his latest campaign with this weekend’s G1 Oakleigh Plate, firmly in his sights.

“We had mapped his preparation all out and this (Oakleigh Plate) was the target race. He’s performed really well in his first two races this preparation so he comes into this race in really good order” confirmed Lauriston’s Operations Manager James O’Brien.

The two runs this preparation consists of a win first up in the Listed Kensington Stakes (1000M) before leading all bar the final stride when finishing a nose second to Shamal Wind in the W. J. Adam Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield three weeks ago.

“I actually think his last start, even though he came second, was perhaps his career best race.”

“He carried 60kgs and he is only a small horse. With 55kgs on his back Saturday, he won’t know himself. Of course, gate sixteen is pretty disappointing.”

As was the case when he contested the 2011 Oakleigh Plate as a 3yo, the barrier draw hasn’t been kind to General Truce and connections.

He jumped from gate seventeen in ’11 but produced one of the fastest closing sectionals of the race in finishing eighth, beaten only three lengths behind Eagle Falls.

“It (the barrier) is pretty disappointing and it will make it tougher for him, but obviously there is plenty of pace drawn underneath us and hopefully Andrew (Mallyon) can find a spot for us”.

If any jockey could find the right way home for General Truce, it is likely to be Andrew Mallyon.

Mallyon rode the horse at his first five starts and almost four years later, was reunited with him at the beginning of this preparation. Recent results have taken their partnership record to seven starts for three wins and two seconds.

What has kept General Truce racing consistently all this time? Well, there’s no secret according to O’Brien; they’ve just kept the horse happy.

“Ricky’s (trainer Ricky Maund) stable environment is pretty relaxed. He’s got the beach that’s the first thing, so there’s a lot of beach work. It’s not like an intense city stable environment.”

“He’s also a very good ‘do-er’ and when he does spell, he spells tremendously well. He spells at our farm and in fact, on the odd occasion Ricky’s been a bit critical that he’s come back too gross.”

The O’Brien’s well renowned orange and green colours have been carried by some smart performers over the years, including G1 winners Gold Edition and Ice Chariot but, one horse they’d dearly love to see win at in them at the elite level would be General Truce or “Ollie” as he is referred to by those that know him best.

“Everyone around him just really adores him. He is definitely one of the favourites.”
